My Cork Wood Stump

Hello Everyone, Im new to orchids and about a year and a half ago I bought this cork stump on a whim and it slowly evolved into this. It sits on my kitchen counter year round in frigid New York. Im really surprised it has made it this far without any humidity and temperature control. Most of the plants have stayed dormant during this winter with only a few showing new growths and 3 even blossomed. Last spring many of them blossomed and Im waiting for that to happen again. Besides the orchids are a few margravias and some other vines.

Hello and welcome! I absolutely love this! You certainly have kept your plants happy. I have a cork stump in my exo terra, much smaller, the terrarium is 12x12 so nothing as large as yours but same concept. My stump takes up most of the floor and designed to look like an old tree.

This is gorgeous, how do you keep them watered? Do you have anything inside the stump to help with humility?

That's utterly amazing! Thanks for sharing.

I can't stop looking! Gawd!!!

Okay, I'm feeling left out, the pictures are not showing up. I get a "Bad Gateway' message. ????

I cannot see them either. Just your instructions on taking a screenshot.

Interesting. When I looked earlier the picture was there. Now it's not. I wonder what happened?

Dollythehun 03-16-2017 08:05 PM

It might have expired.

Sorry guys and thanks for the kind comments. I think there was something wrong with the hosting site I used. I fixed the images.

I mist the stump twice a day. It's a lot of work but it's the price I pay for not keeping it in a terrarium like your stump. There's nothing aiding it for humidity. It dries out in the winter time between mistings but I can see some of the plants like this. In the summer it stays moist throughout the day. The only light source is the kitchen windows and patio doors.

WOW!!!!!

Pattywack 03-16-2017 08:47 PM

It is really really nice, makes me want to grab a larger cork stump! I have some spaghnum moss thrown into my stump just for extra humidity and it helps keep things on the stump moist.

I spray mist daily, no misting system so the moss helps. How tall is this stump?

Dollythehun 03-16-2017 09:06 PM

Wow.

I never thought about adding spaghnum moss to the inside of the stump. Thanks for the idea, I'll experiment with that. The stump is just shy of 21" tall" it has about 30+ plants on it right now and there's room for another 20 more. My picture shows the more populated side.

I dont have a lot of moss inside the stump maybe 2 cups, I mist inside the stump as well. It helps with humidity definitely.

Your stump is amazing, I'm sure you enjoy it. It certainly has given me ideas! I really like cork for mounts, dont know why I never thought to do this.

People here use cholla cactus skeletons for mounts. They have hollow centers and a cylinder of wood mesh. For water-loving plants you can fill the center channel with moss.

Gorgeous. You sure are doing a good job with it.

Amazingly beautiful floral chaos.

Magnificent mountain of magic!

Wow, this is wild and so beautiful! I tried growing Marcgravia cuttings in my large vivarium but had a hard time with them. I think they needed more light than mine had at ground-level.

Marcgravias are actually very easy to keep, marcgravia rectiflora is alittle difficult. One thing you have to be careful of is to not keep them too moist. They grow on trees and like to stay dry

oops I just caught a mistake, Marcgravia Sintenisii is the hard one. Rectiflora is not difficult at all

DirtyCoconuts 11-21-2019 08:55 PM

This is amazing. Very very well done!
