Cycnoches Yellow Coffee
OK, I'm new to this forum and wanted to start with a question. I purchased Cycnoches Yellow Coffee a week ago. It is already putting out a spike. Yeah! Now, the question is, does anyone know the parentage? I found no registration infos and was wondering, if it may simply be a named species clone. Therre is a second, Cyc. Green Coffee, also available in Europe.
Fotos show a Cyc. bartholium-type flower, but they are not very good quality. Any infos are welcome. ciao für now, Jamie |
Welcome! I don't know anything about the plant, but somebody will probably come along soon and help.
|
Thanks for the welcome, dry heat! Ah, the Sonoro, in strong competition with Death Valley. Drove through on the way to LA.
Yeah, I hope someone has infos. The seller had no material, other than it was possibly produced by Jumbo Orchids in Taiwan. They are recovering from a double typhoon at the moment. cheers, J. |
There are no registered hybrids called Yellow Coffee or Green Coffee, in any genus. I also considered Yellow 'Coffee' and Green 'Coffee' - certainly nothing like that in a Cycnoches intra- or inter-generic hybrid. And I find no evidence of 'Yellow Coffee' or 'Green Coffee' as cultivar names in any genus. And no evidence on the Jumbo Orchids website of anything at all called Coffee.
Untraceable orchid trade names are becoming more common - and they might not even be the same thing consistently. Good luck finding anything meaningful. |
Your only hope would be to contact the grower, if you know who that might be. It is possible they might be able to give you some information.

I found your orchid being sold in "Naturformen - Schwerter Orchideenzucht". and in the online store of POKOJOVKY.cz....maybe they can provide you with the email or contact for the grower who provides them with orchids.
I also posted a picture of the flower |
Thanks, all.
My plant comes from Schwerter Orchideenzucht, however, they have no idea as to parentage. They think it may have come from Jumbo Orchids, as it was imported this Summer from Taiwan. It is apparently not that new a plant, as it would have to be a mericlone, with two colour versions being marketed. Maybe the parentage was lost and it was never registered. If they are species clones, then registration infos would not be found, but one would expect some mention in the on-line literature. Whatever the case, I'm going to keep on it (I've posted in other forums in a few languages). Just love an orchid mystery. (plus, if I use the plant in breeding, a name would be good). cheers, Jamie |

Here are the first blossoms on my Cycnoches Yellow Coffee. Different as the On-Line Fotos, especially the lip, which look feminine, rather than the appendaged masculine lips. There are pollinia. Intersex blossoms?
Another spike is underway. cheers, Jamie |
Looks like Martha Clarke crossed with either Jean E. Monnier or cooperi.
|
Steve,
thanks for the input. Based on the lip form and spotting, I expect Cyc. loddigessi to be in there somewhere. I found a cross listed from South America with a complex parentage involving Cyc. loddigessi, Cyc. egertonainum, Cyc. cooperi and Cyc. herrenhusanum. No fotos, no registration, so just a wild guess. Ahh, the plot thickens....... |
