Wild orchids of the South Coast

Some of the orchids i spotted at some nature reserves and along the road in the South Coast region of Natal, South Africa.

This was the first of the orchids from the Lake Eland lodge in Oribi Gorge i saw, a huge rock stood covered in these plants, unfortunately they were mostly done blooming but here it is, Tridactyle bicaudata subsp. rupestris.

I had to klimp up a bit from the roadside to see this nice species, Cyrtorchis arcuata.

This was the first terrestrial i saw, there were two big colonies of these plants, one was slightly tinged with purple and the other was very vibrant purple pink. Stenoglottis machloughlinii.

This was quite a stunner, not as many blooming though, Rangaeris muscicola.

This Polystachya was not in bloom but was ID as pubescens as it is the only one to be found in the region,

At first glance this looks like the very common plant found in Natal, the Flame lily, later it was ID as Brownleea coerulea, sadly was to early for blooms.

I saw this species while we were riding on the horses next to the beach, and on our way back i saw a reasonably sized colony. While we were in the car to see the plants i saw a single plant in bloom, Eulophia angolensis. And while i was exploring Port Edward i saw another big colony with at least 30 plants.

Lastly i saw this Satyrium on our last day while i was looking for Eul. horsfalii and Corymborkis corymbis (to no avail :( ) two done blooming plants some babies and plants someone pulled up, dead:(( Satyrium sphaerocarpum.
