need help
i have a phalaenopsis and there is 2 new branched that have grown and have big bud of flower, since 3 week, but it stop growing ,the floors will not open, could it be lighting problem.

Ray 02-09-2008 09:02 AM

All sorts of things can stall bud opening, but as phals are low-light plants anyway, that's probably not the issue.

I'd go with lack of humidity or insufficient watering.

thanks ray, for now on i will water it more

Ray 02-09-2008 12:34 PM

Before resorting to that, what is your current watering regimen, and what is the potting medium and its condition. Are the leaves nice and plump?

daniel 02-09-2008 01:18 PM

the leave seam to be OK. i water it every 7 day to 10 day.

There could be a couple of things in play.

1) humidity, more than amount of water, but of course, that depends on the condition of the roots and how moisture-retentive your medium is.

2) As that plant has rebloomed from an old spike, it simply might not have the energy to do so again, right now.

I noticed a light fixture of some sort behind your phal...are you using that to supplement the window it's siting in front of? How much light is the phal getting each day?

daniel 02-10-2008 01:42 PM

yes i am using the light fixture, from 3.00 pm to 2.00 am

You should probably run the supplemental light to coincide with extended daylight hours to maybe 14, not 18 or 19 as you have it now.

Unless it's almost in contact with the plant, a 13W fluorescent probably adding very little energy, so I'd look for a lot more wattage. I supplement my brighter-growing plants with a 200W CFL from 5 AM to 30 minutes past dawn, and again from 30 minutes before dusk to 9 pm.
