Sushi Roll Repotting
 

That's the best name I could come up with. I'm sure many have come up with the same or similar methods, but I independently came up with this for one of my Cymbidiums.

It was a large plant, but dying in the center and it seemed like rot was spreading to healthy pseudobulbs, so I decided major surgery was necessary.

I basically cut the plant almost in half then cut out all the bad pseudobulbs and their rotting roots, then washed off all the old potting material from the roots.

So then I basically rolled it back up like a sushi roll and repotted the healthy portion. One thing did go wrong and a pseudobulb became totally disconnected so I guess it's not officially one plant anymore, but it's a NOID so it doesn't matter.

I fertilized it with kelp and grow fertilizer and a dash of liquid karma then let it sit for a while then washed some Listerine over the cut parts.

It looks really good now, but I'll keep you posted.

Unique as this might be, a problem will occur when the new growth coming from the center of the "roll" will have no place to enlarge and will just push up with no place to send the roots.

what does listerine do? I would be afraid it would burn the roots!

It is a disinfectant. I've seen it recommended in these forums. Just the original yellowish one.

would it kill fungi or possible fungi infections.

It might, but I think it's more antibacterial.

I've used a green spearmint one on my plants as well. It doesn't just have to be the yellow one necessarily (I couldn't get that, I don't think it's as popular over here).

Any variety other than the original would have flavouring and artificial sweeteners in it. I don't know how plants would react to these additives.

Actually, I somehow got it so all the new growths were facing outward.
