C. amethystoglossa Roy's x amethystoglossa 'Exotic spots'
 

Just bought one today, what was I thinking ?!

Read old threads about it and understand it has to get fairly tall like 2 ft before it will bloom and they do not like repotting.....and they like a lot of sun.Scent description is highly variable (some find it offensive) but vendor said it is very fragrant.

It is in a green plastic pot with granite chips for media. Roots are sticking to the pot.

Plastic pots and the dense granite media will not be suitable here,so I need to repot even though plant does not like that.

Is anyone growing this one and what do you grow it in (pot and media) ? How is the fragrance on yours?

I have a small one that I am growing in medium bark that seems to be struggling. I have also read that they are really fussy about re-potting. I bought mine bare root and suspect that is my problem. It wasn't a good time to re-pot it at the time I ordered it. I would try and adjust your watering schedule to how it is currently potted and wait until new roots are just starting before you re-pot it. I have read they will pout till they eventually die if potted at the wrong time. It seems that is what mine is doing.

I see.....only problem is our summer rains. I keep plants outdoors so they can get enough light and moisture.Rainy season is going to start soon and I hope plant can take it.
Should I poke holes in the plastic container ? For more air....we have very high humidity here.

Oops.....it is actually loddigessi, not amethystoglossa.

Sorry for confusion.

However, I already repotted amethystoglossa though, and probably roots were lose enough in pot to dunk the whole thing in a wood basket. It did not have much media to begin with. So, time will tell how it does.

Now, about real culprit...loddigessii... I guess same advise applies since it is also a bifoliate.
Somehow I keep gravitating towards bifoliates now.

I have an amethystoglossa that has bloomed for the last two years. It's potted in a clay pot with Hydroton (LECA) and some tree fern mixed in. Ruben, from Ruben in Orchids, told me that amethystoglossa likes more moisture than other cattleyas so I water it often. I did have a loddigessi but I gave it away and I can't remember much about it. I think I was growing it the same as other cattleyas in clay pots with Hydroton or other rock medium. They say not to repot bifoliates until you see new root growth but my amethystoglossa usually puts out new roots in the fall and that doesn't seem like a good time to repot. I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
By the way there's a very nice little orchid and bromeliad show at Flamingo Gardens on Flamingo Road south of 595. It's a beautiful place with huge old oak trees covered with ferns and bromeliads. Tame peacocks walk around in the crowd and they have several kinds of exotic birds. There's an AOS judging room where they judged orchids yesterday. There are probably about 15 orchid vendors there along with other vendors. I went yesterday and it's open today, Easter Sunday, until 4:30. You might enjoy it, if you get a chance to go.

Well, I don't have a loddigessii but I have a C. Loddiaca which has loddigessii as a parent. I grow it the same as my other Catts in medium bark. It has bloomed twice since I got it as a large seedling so seems happy. But I always try and re-pot my orchids only when there is new root growth.

Tucker, I live close to Flamingo Gardens and went there for the show yesterday and today....bought total 11 plants..... now got to find space for them.
