repotting a Cattleya orchid that is out of control . Has been neglected for years.

Hi I am from Merritt Isl. FL. I live in a great climate for growing orchids under my Oak trees. I have a orchid that is so root bound in the pot and is huge. Where do I start to start some new pups.

Is it in growing new roots now? The time to repot / divide is when it is in active growth, and most likely it should be preparing for the winter (=sleep)...

Many grow year round, but yes, the best time to repot and divide is when new growths have roots starting (using care to not break off the new roots)

Any divisions should consist of at least three matured growths plus one new.

I agree with above comments...wait till spring when new growth (roots) are showing, then make all divisions at least 3-5 psuedobulbs each...don't put them in too big a pot to start with, keep the pots tight! good luck!

Orchid is so root bound I can't find where to seperate it.

I has a lot of new roots. I can't even see the pot. or where to divide it. I live in a fairly warm climate except we get a blast of cold air for about 2 days a week. Guess I should break the pot. Year before last it was loaded with blooms at Christmas so I brought it inside to show it off. I spent about 2 hrs. today getting rid of roots that were attached to dead stalks. It was a mess. Thanks for your suggestions.
