Hiya from Down Under.

Hiya.

My background has been in keeping marine reef aquariums and amphibian terrariums. I was slowly introduced to orchids through terrarium epyphites and the hobby-come-obsession kind of spread from there.

I've been limited largely to windowsills for the first year or two of my orchid hobby, but my partner and I just bought our first house together in rural western Victoria, Australia.

Although the climate here will be an interesting challenge, (think long Arizona-type summers with short, northern California-type winters), having our own house means I get to finally build a nice big greenhouse!. Super excited.

Looking forward to getting to know some of you and hearing your advice and anecdotes.

I also enjoy gaming, classic cars and cooking. I'm thirty years old and easily the youngest orchid hobbiest within 250 kilometres by a margin of 30 years or so. Whilst the local clubs are fun, I'm not sure many of the other members know how to turn a computer on. So a bit of global web knowledge can only help me along I figure :D

Cheers! :)

:welcomeflowers: I've built a greenhouse myself and it's a very fun experience, just don't expect everything to turn out as you planned! there are loads of informative greenhouse threads on here, I hope you find them helpful.

:hello and welcome to the forum. Wish I could have a green house to but not sure I could pay to heat it. Gets cold here.

Heheh, I'm going to be in the opposite situation, trying to keep the damned thing cool enough through 45 degree, (113f for the metrically challenged), summers.

Luckily we rarely drop below freezing through winter, so heating shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Welcome to the board! We built a greenhouse this past Spring. There are still a few things I'd like to do with it, and many of my visions have come to fruition. It's been a fun road. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask the questions

Hi Megrim,
Welcome to the Orchid Board. Glad you joined us. I started out on orchids 7 years ago the same way. Trying to find cool orchids to stick in my vivariums for my frogs. I'm still doing it now, minus the frogs. Have a couple of tanks without any animals in it (at least not vertebrates).

Never tired reefs myself, but I did start out with freshwater aquariums. Its hard hobby to keep up with, but worth it if you care for it.

Hey Megrim,

glad I won't be the only one enduring the hot Victorian summers!
Look forward to hearing how your greenhouse comes along.
