Growing Past the Dead Point!!
 

I am not sure how much longer will these two Keiki's survive? As you may see in the pictures, one grew naturally, one I tried the paste on.

I am Proud of them both.

Unfortunately though, the spikes they are growing on are dying back rapidly and are dying past the point at where the keiki's are joined! Aarrgghhh

There is absolutely no sign of roots yet and I know patience is the key, but will they still be able to get nutrients from the mother to survive?

Only time will tell what's going to happen. I have keikis that are 2 years old and still on a green spike so I'm kind of surprised to see those spikes turn brown. You never know what plants are going to do. Good Luck.

Aren't those tiny roots on the one? hopefully it will jump start them to get to growing.

No Hun, they are not roots. The one that's sticking out a bit is the tissue like leaf stuff where it burst out of the stem from and the other two downwards marks I think is where the spike itself is decaying downwards.

They are definitely not roots I'm afraid.

Yea, I second what Tucker said... They do what they want, when they want...

Maybe watering the Mother plant w/ KLN, or Seaweed will get those hormones up to the keike? I have Keikes that are a few yrs old, but they are also on green spikes (it's a species Phal), when it started new Keikes 2-3 weeks ago, it started growing roots right along with the leaves (I've never seen roots that early... I don't think, but can't remember if it did that the first time? Have been giving the mother seaweed, I want her to have more roots, but it's only her babies growing them, ATM, maybe that KelpMax (seaweed) has something to do with it?... No idea :dunno:)

I have read of the use of seaweed on here this last day or so but have never heard of it before this. I live near to the River Mersey (Ferry Across the Mersey ~ Gerry & the Pacemakers), so I might just go get some.

I think I have a simmilar situation with my keikis. The stem which now has 4 keikis on it has started to dry out from tip downwards, but stopped right at the point where the keikis are. The keikis are just fine, their roots are growing and even have new leaves. I just took a picture and hope to be able to post it, so you can see it.

The brown thin part in the middle is what dried out. As you can see, the keikis are looking fine.

I have a basal keiki that came to the point of sitting on almost dead stem with no leaves as the mother has died piece by piece.
I've been misting the keiki base once a day with seaweed and it's started growing roots, very slowly, one root a time. I finally just lowered the stem into the pot and wrapped the keiki's base with a mix of moist sphag and coconut fibers. It seems to be working.


Also, I'm not sure why the mother is planted in beads rather than bark mix? That could be a factor that contributes to the over all plant health, including the spike - wrong media.
