Phalaenopsis mounting question.
Happy 4th. ^_^
Good day. :hello:hello I was wondering how do you properly mount a phalaenopsis. I have a NOID Phal. and it's not doing real well it's pot it's on. I have it in Better Gro orchid mix and its in a plastic pot with lots of holes in it. Here some histoy from when I got it. I got it a a hardware store and the flowers didn't look great but the leaves felt fine. I looked at the roots and the ones I saw we're on a little sriviled. I got it for $12 from $30. Cuz of the flowers. I got it home and reported it. I reported it in merical grow (this was before I knew about the original mix) and the flowers perched to and it made new ones. Then I found out about the MG original and repotted again in Better Gro. I had to cut off most of the roots. I also cut off the flower spikes so that the poor thing can focus on its roots and leaves. Now I went to water it today and I has one new roots and the other ones look like crumpled paper. Thanks you all. :hello ---------- Post added at 01:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:49 PM ---------- I read online how to do it but I saw two different ways. One was upside down and the other was upright. Which way is the best?? What it's the best mount to mount it to?? |
Phals should be mounted up-side-down. That's the way they grow in the wild and it prevents water from sitting in the crown of the plant. I actually try to mount it at an angle so that it isn't growing straight down but more out from the mount and down. The only mounts I've used have been tree fern plaques and they seem to work fine. I put some sphagnum moss between the roots and the mount but don't put any moss over the top of the roots. Unfortunately, with mounted phalaenopsis, you need to water almost every day. They are high maintenance when they're grown that way.

Here is another method. It worked very well until an infection killed it. It wasn't because of the way it was mounted but just stressed from the cold winter this year. Anyway here's a couple pics. It is in a plastic basket I got from HD in the spa dept. The phals are in very coarse bark held in place by sphagnum moss tied across the top of the pot.

6 inches across. Not too big but I put two phals in it so it didn't look too big. Both different colors too. Thought it would look cool if both flowered at the same time.

They look nice. I'll have to to pick one of those up next time I go to lowes. I need sphag anyway............and maybe a little bracket mate for the one that's going in?? Hehe:rofl:
