when to water my new orchids
1 Attachment(s)
Hello all
this las week I went to the San Diego Orchid show and I walked away with only a couple orchids, I bought a Laelia nevesiana and a laelia briegeri both in tiny clay pots from Andy's orchids the guy at the both told me to water every day I know that clay pots wick a lot of the humidity away from the media en roots the media is gravel and I grow my orchids in my open porch. Should I water every day? every other day? there's no apparent new growth on the plants. please Help! and does any one have any experience with Laelia nevesiana information on the net is very limited not even pictures of rhe flowers |
The Laelias you bought are from a group of Laelias called "rupiculous." They grow mostly (if not all) on rocks and boulders, so the gravel potting mix is about standard for them. With them growing in gravel, it would be impossible to over-water them, so yes, I'd water them every day.
Since you just bought them, they will need time to adjust to your climate. Once they are adjusted, you should see new growth - sometimes it just takes a little while to see orchids come alive, so to speak. Have fun growing them - they're a type of orchid I've always wanted to try, but for some reason or another I've never bought any. -Tim |
Thank you Tim I water them on Monday today I stuck a tooth pick in the gravel and I could feel the toothpick I little bit humid still, Ill water them tomorrow.
I been reading about this laelias for the last year and I wanted some so when I walked in and saw them I went for them. Im still looking for information on the L. nevesiana the guy from Andy's couldn't tell much about it also so I bought it just cause apparently is rare Thanks Ramon |

I don't know if you saw this web page. No flower picture but a brief description of the blooms. It says it was recently described, which may be why there isn't much info on it. There is a bit of culture info on that page as well. |
Thanks Silken that's about all the info I have been able to find so far, i watered the orchids today and found a new growth on the briegeri hope it keeps developing
