Variegated Cryptostylis terrestrial orchid(Australia)
Have posted this on a couple of forums as it is hard to find Aussie's online. :)
Just wondering if anyone has ever seen or heard of a variegated form of Cryptostylis? I have living in a pot a single plant that I (legally) salvaged from a site being cleared about 6 months ago. It only had a single leaf and I thought maybe it had just been deproved of sun and that may have caused the variegation, however in the last couple of weeks it has begun to put up a flower spike and the stem is also variegated despite the plant getting plenty of light. I am now waiting impatiently for the flower to develop so I can check what species it is(there are two common around here) and hoping it starts putting out more leaves! |
:welcomeflowers: Glad you found us!
Sounds cool - hopefully someone will be able to answer your question - good luck! |
I vaguely recall of the mention of a variegated Cryptostylis spp. offered for sale in another country, but they're pretty rare in cultivation here in the US. Cryptostylis are not terribly popular here in the US.
The only way that I can think of to know for sure if there are far more genetically diverse populations of the species or genus in the propagative populations in each respective country that carries them for sale, or scientists can scour the Australian regions where they are found on a regular basis, idk. Since Australia has cut off international sales to the US due to extremely unreasonably high exportation costs, the US will not be experiencing any kind of genetically diverse populations of any kind of native Australian terrestrial orchid that made it into the country for a long while. |
Thanks guys. I was pretty pleased with the find and even more pleased that it seems to so far be doing well in a pot. I have quite a bit of both of the local common Cryptostylis species in my garden as ithey are quite prolific in this area and is therefore rather common in my salvage locations, however despite extensive searches this is the only variegated one i have found so far.
