I just wanted to stop by and say hello to everyone from Hawaii! My name is Steve and I am 27 years old and have been an orchidophile since I was about 14. I am mainly a "species" guy, with most of my experience concerning the Cattleya types. However, over the past year or so I have discovered a passion for the "wierd" orchids, ie. the Catasetum types, as well as Stanhopeas and more recently, Gongora. I look forward to swapping info and maybe a few 'chids! Aloha,

Steve

Aloha Steve! Welcome to OB. What island are you on? Hawaii is about my most favorite place on the planet. Between orchid greenhouses and snorkeling I could keep myself entertained for eternity!

My son is also an orchid grower and has an affinity for the weird ones too. He picked up a Gongora (can't remember which one) and a Den. spectabile.

I find myself acquiring more and more species plants. I'm particularly fond of species dendros and phals.

:) Hay Steve, Welcome!!
I love all the weird types of orchid you mention. Ooooh if i had a greenhouse or the right conditions

No slippers eh?!
Good to have you here, see you around the forums :D

Welcome Steve! I am sure there are many others on here who will help you increase your collection of "weird" orchids. The weirdest orchid I have so far is an Aeranthes ramosa which I surprisingly haven't killed yet since I am a beginner!
Do you mostly grow outdoors or indoors? I think the Cattleya alliance is my favorite so far. Happy growing and we look for to any advice you can give us in the future!

Welcome to the Orchid Board Steve! Glad you were able to join! I bet you don't have any problems growing anything over there in Hawaii!

Aloha Steve

It must be amazing to live there!
We're planning a vacation there for next October...it's my husband's dream and he's dragging me along :coverlaugh:

We'd love to see some :photo: of your collection...and surroundings ;)

If you have any questions, feel free to ask :)
Nice to have you here with us :)

I'm planning a vacation there too with my Girl Friend, but for April/Spring Break. Which Island would you reccomend?

quiltergal 09-28-2007 03:21 PM

Tin you need to do at least 2 islands to maximize the cost of airfare! My favorites are Maui, and Kauai, but I like the Big Island too. The east side of Oahu is beautiful as well over near Kaneohe.

Hello from Brazil and welcome, Steve!

Wow, so many responses and questions! Its good to hear from so many fellow orchidophiles! As for answers to some questions: I live on Oahu, but will be moving back to the Big Island in May. I grow everything outside which, for the most part is great. However, whenever we have a few weeks of straight rain (like now!) I start to get a little worried about soggy medium! As for which island would I recommend to visit: the Big Island is the best one in my opinion! It is the largest (duh!), has the fewest amount of people, is nicknamed the "orchid isle" for a very good reason and I dont know of any other place on the planet where you can get as close to red hot lava as you want to!
