More new paphs!!!
I like to visit the flower market and find something I had in mind. or sometimes find something totally unexpected.
This past week, I had both of these occasions. One is a vini color maudiae, Paph Hilo Ruby 'Double Diamond' x Paph Hsinying Glory#2. I have seen quite a few vini color in the past one month, but they all had issues with bloom. I am quite happy with this one but still in search of even darker, almost black one. The other one is a spotted complex type, Paph Pandemonium 'Shock Wave' HCC/AOS x Paph Thunder Mountain 'Monarch Pass'. I have always been quite grossed out by the spotted complex paphs, but when I saw one in person last week, it was quite stunning! It was the only one left too, so I didn't have much choice but bringing that baby home. The spotted one is quite big. The bloom spreads out to be about 6.5 in, bigger than the green complex I have. The leaf span and the leaves size are also larger. a bit worried about the big size already. One thing I don't like about the way many of these paphs are sold is that they seemed to be cut off as a single growth from a larger clump. I hear that it is not a good thing for a plant. Even these single cut off plants usually come with one or two tiny little new growths attach to the main growth, but these two new guys are totally on their own. oh, welll, what do I do? :(( For now, I just kick back and enjoy the beautiful blooms. :) |
I really like your spotted one.

Thank you, Joann.
It does have a large dark brown spot on one of the leaves toward the center, which bothers me a little. At least, it is not wet, but dry. I think it might be a machenical damage. I did pour in some hydrogen peroxide on it though just in case. will see if it spreads. if it does, I will cut the flower spike and dump the plant as I have lots of other healthy orchids to protect. |
Great looking flowers and plants!
I wish I had a flower shop that carried living plants much less orchids!!! |
Nice ones you got there...love the spotted one...I still envy your large window cause its not filled up yet, heh
Its winter, and the flower market still brings in orchids? WOW...I need to go there too! |

Now is the season for the complex type along with others. They start selling paphs in the fall through winter. Phals and intergenerics (well, different types come out at different times throughout the year, which makes it interesting to visit the market everyweek to see what's there) are there all year around. Certain dendrobiums are also year round. but the best season is summer through fall. Zygo was there in the fall until early December. Two stores had cattleyas last month, no more. Some still carry tolumnias. Pretty soon, they will start selling nobile type dendrobium. I'm hoping to find some more nice paphs I'm looking for. not easy...but I keep trying. |
Love them both, but the spotted one..... I also envy your window!!!!
