Paph Prime Child - bought in bloom

I went to an orchid show at the weekend and here is one of my new purchases.

Prime Child is a primary hybrid of rothschildianum x primulinum and I can see characteristics of both parents in there. I immediately recognised it as a roth hybird, but the angular pouch of that is softened by the primulinum.

I love this and I've kind of decided this is going to be my replacement for the Pinocchio I lost (which is also a primulinum hybrid).

I'm not sure if this is sequential or not, it seems to look like it might be as there is a possible 2nd bud starting to form, on top of the 2 flowers and bud that are clearly visible. I'm not sure if primulinum is the parent that gives Pinocchio that feature or not.

Unfortunately the top flower has a big blemish and I can't photograph the lower flower without the spike of the upper one. It still looks fantastic to my eyes though :)

The plant looks good and healthy and has some new growths :)

Nice to see the pics Rosie, it looks amazing!! That top pic is really good, I think it's calendar material for next year. :)

About the bud, I don't think it's really sequential. My cute Noid that I got end of October did the same thing, and now all 3 blooms are open together on the spike.

Rosie -

Love this one. The leaves of the paph look huge! This can't be the first fan - how many are there in the pot?

I'm going to have to add this one to the wish list. Thanks for sharing.

It's funny, the leaves of my roth primary hybrid look nothing like yours, the fans are compact and mottled. It took after the delenatii parent.

Thanks Camille and J,

Yes, the plant is pretty big, and most definately not like the mottled leaf paphs, but big long strap leaf types.

There are two big fans in the pot, the second one does not look like it's ever flowered and looks to still be growing so I hope it's one that can flower later for me. There is a third tiny tiny fan which I think is a new one just starting. We shall have to see, hopefully it will grow.

I agree I don't think it's the first fan, or its a division from a bigger plant. The grower had a few paphs and phrags which were a lot bigger than the other plants he was selling. He did have a very large phrag (primary bessae hybrid) with about 10 fans and priced at £120. He said he didn't think he would sell that as there is only ever a few people who want that size plant. He said it was the last chance to sell otherwise he was going to divide it into perhaps 4 or 5 plants as he thought he could get more for it that way. I wonder if this is perhaps a division from a larger plant that he's done the same thing with.

I was surprised how low the price was on this as Roth hybrids have been a LOT more when I've seen them in the past. However I think the softer pouch shape is perhaps the reason for that.

I don't know, I've never thought of those hybrids as expensive, they seem to be in the norm for Paphs. I even consider that I got my 4 fan plant quite cheaply, it was only 16-17€.

A shame for the grower to divide that huge plant, but he needs to earn his money somehow.

The third flower opened last week, but the first has now dropped. Hubby took some more pics :)
