Phal. violacea var. Sumatra
YAAAY!!! My SECOND Phal species has FINALLY bloomed! I AM SOOO EXCITED!!! Let me introduce Phal. violacea var. Sumatra 'Prism Bow.' I decided to add a cultivar name knowing that I will be getting a LOT more of these, and I chose 'Prism Bow' because the petals are reflexed, which though in judging standards are undesirable, makes this flower quite charming. The fragrance is WONDERFUL, and I could smell it long before the flower was fully opened. To me it smells like a sweet, sugary, bubblegum, with a weird base smell that I can only describe as fatty. I know it might sound crazy, but that is the best description I can think of! Sheesh, so much talking, now it is time for pictures!
Here is my thumb for size reference (I can give exact measurements for those who are sticklers for the size) http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1020659.jpg A side view for the amount of reflexing. http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1020655.jpg And finally, just the flower! http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1020648.jpg |

nice! what are you crossing this one with?
question for you- whats the deal with cultivar names. i thought that if your plant got an aos award, then you could add a cultivar name. |

-It is true that you get to register an official cultivar name when you have a plant awarded, but for people that have more than one of the same species or hybrid, they can give it an unofficial cultivar name, which so long as it is not used by an awarded plant, is perfectly valid. It is also handy for hybridists, so they can know what parents were used for what crosses. Another example would be when someone is meristemming a high quality, but unawarded plant, and this is the same in regards to giving a kiekie away, so that the person will know that it is a genetic duplicate, and not a seed raised hybrid. In the case that an unawarded plant gets awarded, I am pretty sure anyone who has that cultivar, will be able to put the award on the tag, seeing that it is genetically identical to the awarded plant. |
