Vappodes lithicola (Den. bigibbum ssp compactum) I think this is the "new" name for this species ?

First time blooming for me - only two blooms. This started a couple more spikes before I brought it indoors, but they have "stalled" since then.
I wasn't able to capture the color properly - it's a vivid fucshia! The 3rd pic was as close as I could get.

(pic 4)
Oncidium No ID intergeneric - looks to me like Goodaleara Tahitian Dancer.

Thanks for looking :)

Very nice blooms! :) The Den looks great mounted.
I have a Den bigibbum hybrid, and it's so cute. I checked the RHS site, and Den bigibbum is still the current accepted name. World Checklist of Selected Plant Families: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

Thanks Camille

hmm - varying info on the genus and species name - this is the bigibbum ssp/var compactum which I have seen now as either Den lithicola or Vappodes lithicola - I found an article about the names a while back, I'll have to see if I can find it again -
but, regardless of name, it is what it is lol ;)
thanks for the info and link :)

ETA: this is one of the articles I had read regarding the name http://keys.trin.org.au:8080/key-ser..._lithocola.htm

Lovely blooms. I have just ordered my first dendrobium that isn't a Nobile type. It has biggibum in it. They don't need a winter rest like Nobile type do they?

WhiteRabbit 02-08-2011 09:37 PM

thanks Stefan :)

silken - no winter rest, but they do require less water in winter

Thanks for the info WhiteRabbit. I ordered a Den. Enobi Purple 'Splash' and will be picking it up at an orchid show in a few weeks. It is coming from Taiwan. I've been trying to get this for a while and want to do right by it :)

Awesome! I'm sure you'll do fine with it, and of course there's always all the helpful people here should trouble arise

Nice growing. For now I'd go with Dendrobium bigibbum at least everybody will recognise this name.

There seems to be a tug of war going on between a group of Australian taxonomists (splitters) and some others that like to keep all Dendrobium together.

Personally I think that the lumpers are right.

Awesome, that one is so gorgeous! Did the grower confirm that the particular plant that you will be getting will indeed have the 'splash' markings? The trouble with this Den is that even among mericlones the splash is not guaranteed. You may end up with a plain purple plant.
