Growing Cattleya Species

Hi there.

Maria wants to venture into the world of Cattleya species, and would like to know (before spending money on plants) whether you wonderful people can point to some books on the subject.

Besides the Baker's culture sheets, what are seminal books on the topic?

Thanks peeps!!!

Wishing Maria great luck ;) Check out St.Germain Orchids in Homestead. I forget her name but she's very sweet and friendly.

:hello There is a beautiful Illustrated Encyclopedia of Orchids edited by Alec Pridgeon and foreword by Alasdair Morrison. That's how I started to learn about species in orchids.Another great source is AOS magazine. They have many articles about all Cattleya species from A-Z written by A.A Chadwick's Orchids and the culture too.:)

In my opinion the best book on Cattleyas is The Brazilian Bifoliate Cattleyas by Dr. Fowlie. Out of all the orchid books and articles that I've read his habitat descriptions are second to none. A couple drawbacks are the price and as the name implies it only covers the Brazilian Bifoliates.

I am a book-a-holic!
Thanks for the recommend on Dr. Fowlie's book!
I highly, highly recommend A.A Chadwick and Arthur E. Chadwick's book The Classic Cattlleyas.
I actually have mine highlighted like one of my old college texts.../she digresses to briefly remember those long ago days
I also have the old series by Withner The Cattleyas and Their Relatives. You would want volume ONE.
Both of these texts have delightful historical vignettes mixed in with the meaty data on taxonomy and culture.
I'd be interested for others in the forum to make recommendations as I too have no problem making room on my shelf for another orchid book :blushing:
