Coelogyne Unchained Melody & Nitida-in spike
 

I thought I would share some of my candy with everybody. This is my first self cultivated coelogyne spike. I also recently purchased coelogyne nitida in spike and my mom got a lovely blooming coelogyne mooreana. I've got great conditions for the cool species and am thinking about trying some of the warm ones indoors. Any suggestions on good warm beginner coelogyne species would be nice, with the addition of a pleasant fragrance would be even nicer.

Yes actually, funny you would ask. The first bloom cracked yesterday and just fully opened this morning! I love it. The coelogynes are working their way up my favorites list. The nitida is coming along slowly but surely I can't wait!

Do you have much experience with, or have any recommendations about the warm growing coelogynes Calvin?

What a cutie! The size looks pretty compact...or are the pictures just being deceiving? If they arent' to large then I might NEED to try growing one....or two!

Beautiful bloom! I'm in love with coelogynes but sadly my conditions are way too warm for most of them. I got cristata to flower for me one year because our central heating broke down in part of the house! This year it languished. I am on a quest for [small] warm growers - you are very lucky you have the conditions for the cool growing ones!

I have success with coel. fimbriata, which blooms it's head off, and coel. flaccida seem to do decently. I have coel. nitida that supposedly doesn't need to be too cool, but I haven't yet had success with it (nearly bloomed one year but blasted in sheath). I just ordered a coel. lentiginosa which is also a nice warm grower. And of course there is pandurata, but that grows to be a monster!

This is ovalis which has been a reliable bloomer (as long as you don't repot it). It does fine here in the south in a shade house with misting system to cool it down during the hot summers. It blooms all the time.

Spike on unchained melody is has fully opened. Has a sweet but then something else..."hmm...not sure about that" at the end fragrance. I love its little charming arching way. Nitida is progressing quickly now. It was so slow for so long I thought it was stuck or going downhill. I'm very excited, I know this one smells great and is very sweet to look at.

Thank you all for the advice on the warm growing coelgynes. I am thinking of lawrenceana or pandurata. Does anyone have any advice or experience with which of these might be more amiable to home indoor conditions or which has a better fragrance? Maybe one lasts longer than the other or flowers more freely?
