C. luteola - Peru

I got this plant from Lee Moore a number of years ago. I've had a lot of luck with the Peruvian Cattleya species, including maxima, violacea and rex. I'm still trying to master iricolor & mooreana.

Great, I love this one. Mine is just a baby.

What about your cultutre makes you so successful in growing Peruvian orchids?

Hi Royal Orchids,

For me, the Peruvian forms of luteola, violacea & maxima are easy to grow. I killed my fair share of Brazilian violaceas & Ecuadorean maximas. I grow the luteola mounted on a 1/4 coconut husk. I selfed it this year hoping to be able to flask up the seed pods, but I think I waited too late. None of the pods took. I have a few luteolas growing in pots, but they just don't seem to do as well...plan to pull them out and mount them later. I grow violaceas on cork. (I have a friend who does this also). I' haven't had much luck growing them in pots. The maximas grow well in a clay pots and seem undestructable. I don't think I've ever had a maxima die on me. I've had success with rex mounted on tree fern. I'm still trying to master mooreana and iricolor. I have both in pots and mounted. (They don't seem to like either much). Probably too hot in South Florida.

What about light and humidity? Are you growing in a greenhouse?
