Up-to-date Masdevallia nomenclature
For those of you who haven't changed your Masdevallia plant tags yet, here's a list with all the new correct names. A couple years ago, Luer broke up the genus into a whole bunch of new ones; there still is a genus Masdevallia, but it's not nearly as big as it was. If you click "Up" at the top of the screen, you get a list of all the pleurothallid genera with up-to-date nomenclature for each.
Masdevallia names Not sure if this should go here or in the Scientific Matters forum, but I'm putting it here because this list is specific to pleurothallids. |
Thanks for the info, but I'm getting really tired of all their name changes! Now I know that my Masdevallia bicolor is now called Alaticaulia bicolor. :faint: I doubt I'll even remember how to spell that!

Icones Pleurothallidinarum XXVIII! Oh goody, another volume for me to buy.
|
OHGAWD, I already have two changes and I only got halfway down the A list and then Camille immediately tells me my bicolor has a name change.

It's a very useful smiley for this thread! :coverlaugh: Last night I dutifully changed the name on the ex masdie's tag. I'll still call it a masdie though, it's more simple to write! |
I know what you guys mean! I bought a Masdevallia rechingeriana a little while ago and could only find pictures on the web of something called Alaticaulia rechingeriana, after which I found this list and all became clear (Masd. tovarensis has also been moved to Alaticaulia, by the way). I just bought a Masdevallia velifera and I have to change its nametag too to Byrsella velifera (BTW, this one smells like rotting fish, so buyer beware on this one!). I can see the logic behind breaking up Pleurothallis, but Masdevallia? Not so much.

I must be the only person who doesn't get outraged at name changes. I can understand hybrid growers getting annoyed at species splits but why fret over reshuffling genera?
Joseph Has the RHS accepted these name changes? If so, what are the intergeneric names. |
Hi Andrew, I'm not sure if the RHS has accepted the changes. But, I did check the PDF list of intergeneric names on their website, and the new Masdevallia genera do not appear there.Intergeneric Names PDF Mind you, this list is based on Genera Orchidacearum volume four, issued in 2005. The changes were made after this was released.
I also went through the PDF with abbreviations "occurring in current use in orchid hybrid registration as at 31st December 2007" and they're not there either. Orchid Abbreviations PDF Hope this helps! |
:tapfoot::duh::confused::hmm:winner: I'm not looking. :whistling Carol
