Sobralia sessilis

Sobralias are not long lasting flowers. They are delicate and last maybe one, two days at most, but balance this with several flowers.

too bad 'mauro'' that it only lasts 2 days tops.
it is very beautyfull.

These are beauties. Think of their short life this way: they are ephemeral and leave you greatly anticipating the next flowering!

The flowers are short-lived, but come in waves you know? In two weeks I'll have another bunch of flowers that will last for a couple of days, then two weeks later the cycle repeats!

Mauro, that is a very beautiful sobralia, LOL i agree with Evan, ;)

That's great that they come in cycles. It keeps things changing and (at least for me) would increase my interest in the plant. I'd always be checking it for developments. I love how every orchid has its varying charms!

I'd never heard of this orchid before, and I gotta say that I love it!! If it blooms every two weeks or so, I'd be checking on it every day for new things!

Very nice! I just got my first Sobralia recently (gentryi) and am waiting for the first bloom. Do they bloom on the same spikes over and over again like Psychopsis or can I cut them off when they are spent? Also, what media is yours in? Thanks!

Sobralias are really nice orchids, Steve. Most of them can be grown in full sun and quickly form large bushes. I grow two species and both are in a mix of coconut fiber, bark (small grade), shredded pinecone and charcoal, but they grow well in almost every type of medium. Several species are kind of sequential bloomers, the flowers appearing on the top of the long canes, so it is a good idea not to cut any parts of the plant.
