Project 3 (Spring 2007) - Sign Up

Hi everybody...

if you are one of our newer members...:welcome: and you're probably wondering what the new threads are regarding the upcoming OrchidBoard project. Here's some information for you:

Some months back while a few of us were in the chat room, we started talking about how interesting it would be for a bunch of us to each buy one of the same orchid and grow it in our different locations and conditions. Well, our first project included just 5 of us...but what a beginning it was! We had 2 members in Florida (one in Central Fl and me on the west coast), one in NY, one in New Hampshire and one good friend from the land down under...Australia!

We first agreed to use Andy's Orchids as a vendor and they were kind enough to give us a discount for the project! Discounts always make me happy...and a discount on an orchid? Well, it doesn't get much better than that!

We bought Phal lobbii because it's an intermediate growing plant and small in size as a few of us don't have lots of space to grow. Marty set up a special gallery for the "chat project" photos and each month, we add a pic or two to show the progress.

Shortly after that, when our members were seeing the posts and pics, it was suggested that we do it again on a grander scale. Did we ever!!!

We had a total of 19 members participating! :cheer: There are 16 from different parts of the US, 2 in Canada and again, our pal Marleneann in Australia :D For that project, we went with Oak Hill Gardens as the vendor and they also gave us a nice discount
The plant chosen was Angraecum scottianum, again chosen for it's intermediate culture and small size.

By the way, in both projects, when we were placing our individual orders, we each bought 2 or 3 additional 'chids...wouldn't want the project plant to be lonely during shipping, now would we? ;)

Okay, now you've got the idea...and we're doing it again!

On Sunday January 14, 2007 we will have our first chat at 8pm est to start the discussions. It will take a while to make all the decisions and we are not planning on placing our orders until April 2007 so that the problems associated with orchids in winter shipping can be avoided..

We've got LOTS of new members, from across the globe, and wouldn't it be fantastic to really make this project a global experience?

If you think you'd like to join us, go into the NEED SUGGESTIONS thread in our Contests & Polls section of the forums, post a reply with your name and location...I'll take care of adding you to the project list.

We need to first think of what vendor in the US the majority of us will be using and hopefully, our members abroad will be able to find the same plant we choose in their areas. Once the vendor is chosen, we'll work off their website catalog to choose the final plant :D

It'll be a blast...lots of fun along the way, some crazy conversation and you'll really get to know more of the members on this board who share in your love of orchids.

Hope to see you there... :cheer:

I am interested but am off to work now. I would really love it if the choice was a cattleya but if something else was chosen maybe I will broaden my horizons. Lyn in Florida.

Hi Claude, nice to see you here :)
I will add you to the list.
We, as a group, will try to pick a plant that will be available to all participating. You'll be involved in the discussions along the way and the members who were involved in the last project were all happy to make this project work for everybody :cheer:
