👋🏻 Heyo from my Canadian jungle apartment

Hey all,
Dustin here. Some of you know my blog - herebutnot.com. If you don’t, I’m from Central Alberta where the winters are cold, the air is almost always extremely dry and where we have the most number of sunny days compared to other major cities in Canada. That means: harsh, bright, and we have been known to get rain, snow, hail and 25C+ temps in a single day.

I used to focus on big plants and lots of flowers—but for the last 3 years my main pursuit has been flasking and breeding orchids at home. It’s a long process, but I registered my first hybrid 1.5 years after sowing the seeds and I have a few more that should be flowering this winter.

Some photos of my collection:

I grow a lot of aroids and other plants too—can see them on my Instagram account if you’re interested in things other than flowers:

Hey HBN,
admit it you just wanted to show off that handsome face lol.
I'm actually surprised at how much you have managed to cram into such a small space. Good to see they're all still doing well and to have one of my orchid role models who taught me so much of what I know join the forum
I saw that big leafed palm thing on one of your video's and couldn't believe you have that growing in your apartment.

What was that first registered hybrid?

Awesome. What a fun place to be.

:welcomeflowers: HereButNot! :canuck:

Hopefully your start here will become more welcoming as time progresses. I've been through your neck of the woods, as my ex-brother-in-law is a Toronto guy. Lovely areas, both of them. Keep that cold weather up there though!

Your jewel (Macodes petola?, 7th picture down) is truly stunning!

A beautiful example of a well grown "Jewel".

Phrag Memoria Frank Louwe—though it sounds like fischeri is getting rolled into schlimii, so that name will probably be scrubbed.

I registered Phrag L’ Rock a couple months after that, but it’s a hybrid made with fischeri too. Haven’t checked to see if there is a registered hybrid under the new classification though.

I actually didn’t think they’d get so big so fast. I’m used to orchids that take their sweet time to size up. But that’s okay, a lot of my perspectives on “regular plant” care are heavily structured off my orchid care—root oxygenation /airflow, hydration as consistent irrigation cycles and water retentive media, pH and also nutrient forms, and of course light light light.

That palm leaf one on the left is Anthurium decipiens (or possibly salgarense)—depends on who you ask. The one on the right is Philodendron El Choco Red, a formally unregistered species…possibly one called Philodendron triumphans.

And lastly, thanks so much for the many kind words. I’m just glad you’ve been able to take experience I’ve shared and leveraged it to work for your plants ☺️
