How to water orchids - Tips
 

Hi All,
I made a quick (18 minute) video giving tips and tricks for watering your orchids. This starts out as a general discussion and then I get more specific about how I water my plants. I'm curious to hear your opinions.

Just sayin'...think you lecture and teach very well. This hobby has been with me for quite some time but I'm always learning. Like your thoughts on watering and I'll apply it to my plants. Mostly a sink/shower set-up and some outside get the pressurized hand watering job.TY

The most sensible comment in the video is to keep the hobby fun. In nature orchids take their chances with whatever is provided. They are tough plants so don't try to make a complicated science of this basic function. If your plants are not growing well it is more likely to be your overall environment (light, humidity, etc). So many people buy an orchid and expect it to grow well in what they can provide, but different genera need different basic conditions.

I think keeping a hobby fun is a topic that doesn't seem to get much attention, but it probably should. Hobbyists enter and leave any hobby for a variety of reasons, but one of the more common reasons for leaving typically involves some level of unanticipated work becoming a chore. It certainly seems like keeping the hobby efficient helps to minimize the chore aspect. Part of efficiency also involves finding plants that are well suited to one's own growing conditions, which is I won't try Draculas or Disa. I just have any desire to maintain a refrigerator for such critters, for example.

Late to the party, but keeping it fun and using common sense instead of overthinking and making oneself nervous is certainly sage advice. As I've said before, I grow my plant with a 'by the seat of my pants' approach. Convenience plays a big part of it, which is why I have my catts in S/H. I still examine them daily when I can, but I don't need to be consumed with thoughts about over/under watering and such. And Stephen, I approve of your choice of co star. He made himself right at home.

He definitely likes to make an appearance every now and then!
