Orchid/Bush Snails?
2 Attachment(s)
I found these guys on one of my plants. After Googling this board for information I think these are orchid/bush snails?
I only JUST seen these guys and I've been picking them out of my plant's medium. Not sure how many of my orchids have them right now. Is there a good way to check or should I just assume they all have snails? This being the first plant I've seen them on , I'm not sure if they hide or I'm lucky and only one plant is effected ( I highly doubt that ). Also from what I read here coffee dregs and isopropyl alcohol is one of the suggested remedies. I'm guessing normal coffee ( not necessarily the dregs ) would work or maybe strong coffee? |
I've found them only once but had success pouring cold, strong coffee thru the medium. Don't remember the frequency but I think all it took was one dose. Haven't seen them since. Pretty sure I read about this remedy on Ray's site. Buggers were in the bulbos only.

Coffee works well for these. I have gotten them twice and gotten rid of them twice with coffee. Instant or regular coffee both work very well...I have used both. :)

I have been successful with accumulated coffee pot dregs, to which I add some alcohol to keep mold down in the jug.
However, if you want to be certain, pellets containing Measurol is the way to go. |
Thank you all for the help.

I wonder if the product on usa ebay 'kaffn8' can do the job too - at suitable dosage that is. I don't get snails in my growing area fortunately - but I did actually search around online to check out if there are any readily available drops of concentrated liquid caffeine that could be safe for orchids. I just came across that item. But unfortunately it appears to be available in USA only, and do not know if it is orchid-safe.

I am starting to see the snail numbers increasing in my collection too. Dangit. So do you just mix up some coffee and pour it in the plant like you were watering it?
Would bleach/water solution work? |
I wouldn't use bleach on plants. The coffee works well for bush snails. Other types of snails/slugs can be killed off with sluggo/sluggo plus.
