How do you properly store tubers?
I have 4 pecteilis susannae tubers which I have unpotted. I unpotted them because if I leave them in the pot outside, chickens might wander and find them or stray cats might knock over the pot and make the tuber roll away.
I am currently storing them in a plastic bag in a plastic container (so ants won't get to them) in a drawer, but I was wondering if there is a better way to do this. Can you store them in a fridge? (This is a hot-growing species so Im not sure.) Will fungus come if I continue to store the tubers like I currently am? They will be stored for about 5 months, but what about if I want to store tubers for longer? Thanks! |
You ever use portion cups or deli cups? If you use those clear portion cups, punch some small holes on the lid. If you use deli cups, you can buy vented insect container lids.
You can try to put some long strand Sphagnum moss and give it a couple of sprays of water with the spray bottle if you feel that the area where you keep the tuberoids is not humid enough to keep them properly hydrated in storage. Do not make the Sphagnum moss appear wet at all. It must look dry, but still contain the water you sprayed. This is so that the bulbs don't shrivel. I know that Indo is really humid, but I don't know if it is humid enough to store the orchid tuberoids without using moss. If it is humid enough where you live that you can store the tuberoids without them shriveling, then you will not need the moss. |
I am storing them like this currently

Do they really need that much ventilation? The lid has no holes and the cup is in a drawer. But, if I open a hole, ants will come in and possibly start eating the tubers (I previously stored them in a plastic bag, without the cup, and there were tiny ants all the time). |
You should not use plastic bags, yes, ventilation is an issue. Paper bags are better.

Is this good enough? There are 15 tiny (so the ants dont get in) holes on the top and 4 holes of the same size on the sides of the cup.

A paper bag and a dry place is enough. Don't worry so much.:)
