What's Happening' to my Dendro

Just when I was getting "happy" about no scales, room adjustment (shedding bottom leaves), keiki seperation & sudden spike with tiny blooms?

Yay!

Dollythehun 12-21-2016 01:15 PM

Charles, are you asking about a problem. Or celebrating? I see a few spots one leaf but, otherwise, I second Estacion, Yay!

No I am happy but today one of the four buds just plopped off?

flexdc 12-21-2016 02:35 PM

These dens sometimes do that specially when in bud. If there was a sudden change in environment, their buds will drop. I usually let it stay in the same place until all the buds are opened. The flowers don't drop as easily as the buds.

Dollythehun 12-21-2016 02:53 PM

Second that. Bud blast. I lost a whole scape on mine. Actually, my old girl looks pretty rough. Falling off the bench last summer didn't do her any good. She has one good cane now and four back canes. I'm hoping she will recover come spring but, she bloomed her heart out this year. 5 scapes in all.

estación seca 12-21-2016 03:14 PM

And be careful not to let it get too dry when in bud.

charlesf6 12-21-2016 06:15 PM

Blasted! :_(

So this is bud blast, this poor little guy has been through it all now.
Shipped to replace scale infested plant purchased.
It has been left isolated and monitored for last couple of months with new issues arising from time to time.
So much talent (promise) but unable to play ala Chris Bosh :(

Dollythehun 12-21-2016 06:48 PM

Estacion is correct about the watering when in bud. I discovered I have been underwatering and my hence my scapes were prone to getting stuck in the sheath.

"Ascared" to over or under water.
Fert. / soaked real well 6 days ago & pot seems
medium heavy weighted, not light.

Skewer is not dry when it is pulled out.

Dollythehun 12-21-2016 07:10 PM

Understood. You'll get the hang of it. But 6 days seems long. I am in clay and bark that makes it hard to over water.

Thanks... and oh not to worry feet are not in there ;)

Your plant is very young and probably does not have enough strength to maintain buds. commercially we cut these buds off to encourage growth rather than have the plant waste strength that would be better used for growing. If you like seeing a few flowers than go ahead and keep them on the plant. It still will gt better every year.

Interesting dilemma, unsure of which road to choose. :hmm
...Any way thank you very, very much Jerry!

charlesf6 12-23-2016 10:40 PM

Ok another drop last night making my decision for the plants strength a little easier.
Where do I cut?... buds or whole spike?

flexdc 12-24-2016 02:52 AM

You can cut the entire spike if you like
In my experience, it really doesn't matter
Or you can let it be and see if one might open for you

Whats Happening' Updated!

Now the upper leaves are darkening. Sunburn? I have been leaving in my southern window for the last 2 months during the daytime.

Yes, likely due to sun. Purplish tinge is OK. Yellowing or browning not.

charlesf6 02-06-2017 08:05 PM

Could the sunlight in this window have become too strong now that we're here in February in NY? :( I notice a purplish tinge to my Cattleya also.

I place 2 Catts and 2 Dendros each a.m. into this south window before leaving for work, they sit there all day along with 3 hanging Vandas ( I know quite a crowd ).

If the light is suddenly getting stronger as the angle becomes higher, you might consider a sheer curtain to take the edge off the light a little, or move them a bit away from the window. If the light increases gradually, the plants adjust and certainly benefit from it. Sudden increase can toast leaves... I find right around mid March is the most dangerous - suddenly the sun clears the house or surrounding buildings, so plants suddenly are thrust from winter shade into bright sun. Something to watch, each location is unique.

If I am correct, coming into Spring, Feb- March, the sun will be dramatically brighter in that window. A sheer curtain would help.

I noticed today my sun room was actually hot! The plant leaves were hot because someone had turned the fan down. So, a curtain and a fan.... Will help immensely.

charlesf6 02-06-2017 08:35 PM

There is a sheer curtain that I keep pulled back for the hanging Vandas.
I wonder if they would mind me keeping it closed? :)

Roberta 02-06-2017 08:38 PM

If the light is increasing strongly and rapidly, the Vandas would also probably benefit from a gentler transition.
