Winter Watering???

:hello Hi, I was wondering if I should continue to water my mounted orchids 1-2 times a day throughout the winter. Thank you!

jkofferdahl 12-05-2016 05:53 PM

It depends entirely on the type of orchid, and even the type of mount. Plants with distinct inactive periods need less water because they use less water, so these you may be able to skip some. Others, though, require roughly the same watering year-round. If your orchids are stick-mounted, though, just water. It's virtually impossible to over water a stick-mounted orchid.

I have a dwarf Phal, an Oncidium, and a regular Phal. They are all mounted of pieces of wood.

It will partly depend on your temperatures. Almost anything mounted needs near-daily water year round. The plants you mentioned should not be dry for long. I would water them in the morning rather than the evening unless your growing space is quite warm during the day - warmer than most people keep their houses during a cold winter.

Ok. Thank you so much everybody.

I would probably still water the Oncidium each day, but again it partly depends on what type of mount you have. I water my mounted Phals both in the morning and again in the evening.

I assume you keep these indoors? Do you temps drop too much in the winter? In which case you may want to avoid watering later in the day.

Only to about 30˚ F. Thanks everyone so much for the helpfulness, I appreciate it so, so much.

Tindomul 12-07-2016 10:15 AM

30 F indoors?!?

dounoharm 12-07-2016 10:38 AM

most growing orchids need at least 50 degrees constantly....and 30 degrees is below freezing! that will kill most orchids no matter how you water or don't water!

I think you misunderstood my question. How low do the temps go in your growing space?

bil 12-07-2016 02:08 PM

I'll tell you what the weirdest part of winter watering is for me.

Standing in the greenhouse, watering the orchids while outside the rain is drumming on the greenhouse roof!

Tindomul 12-07-2016 02:28 PM

They should make them with detachable roofs.

December is the month where there are many days and nights that hover around 50 and there is a fine mist in the air, 100% humidity. Those are the days I wish I had an outdoor space where I could stick my Masdevallias on. Instead I got to treat them the same as always.

NeonKraken 12-07-2016 05:26 PM

Oh yes, sorry. The temps get to around to 68˚ F at lowest. I grow them inside of my house. I do not currently have a greenhouse.

Tindomul 12-08-2016 10:30 AM

68 as the lowest would probably not cause too much of a slow down in plant growth.

NeonKraken 12-08-2016 05:29 PM

Thanks so much everybody, I really appreciate all the good info.
