Dryadella barrowii????
Purchased as Masdevallia minuta this turned out to be a Dryadella, and I think it's barrowii, but if anyone knows better, I'd appreciate the help.

Thanks, Silken and Hannah. I was rather pleased with it even though it wasn't what I ordered.

Wow! Beautiful!

Thanks, Sonya. Always appreciate the time you spend checking our posts.

I believe that is barrowii. I would email the pic to Karma Forester @ Orchidkarma.com. I think that I saw her post the same Dryadella, but it may be one that is constanly mislabeled and identified incorrectly.
Good luck on the ID. It's a great one, just like the others I have seen you post. Keep up the good work. ---------- Post added at 05:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:36 PM ---------- ---------- Post added at 05:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:37 PM ---------- When I fly back home if I have a barrowii (I lose track sometimes if they haven't bloomed yet) I will send you the plant pic so you can compare the two. Mine would be from Ecuagenera. After looking a Jay's, from what I can see that is a barrowii, in my opinion. |
Thanks, friend. Mine is from Ecuagenera, one of their mislabeled plants. It's always a bit of a lottery with them, though occasionally one strikes the jackpot, as with this (if it is barrowii). I'd rather have it than Masd. minuta any day.

Hello Ron,
if you'd like to know the name of your plant you have to cut a flower into pieces. Dryadella albicans: http://orchid.unibas.ch/phpMyHerbari.../308031.1m.jpg Dryadella barrowii: http://orchid.unibas.ch/phpMyHerbari.../308032.3m.jpg Here you can see my plant: Dryadella? It was identified as Dryadella barrowii. |
I'd seen the drawing by Luer, but finally took a flower apart and it is almost certainly D. barrowii, from the shape of the lip, the spotting on the column, and on the base of the lip. Thanks ever so much for the pictures and information.

Great work ID'ing this one. Nice flower too Ron.
|
Thanks, Tindo. It's very similar to Dryadella albicans and the differences are rather small. I can see them only under a good magnifier. I'm reasonably sure, though, that the ID is correct.

As good as Ecuagenera has been to me, I do wonder about a few of the miniatures I get. I know for certain that one of my Lepanthes was mislabeled, that was easily identifiable, but as you mentioned, thats how it goes sometimes. I always preorder so I can to check them out first and give them the OK.
I have only lost 2 of about 110 in the past year. One Telipogon and a Lepanthes. Probably do to temp, acclimation and impact from shipping. I think that should be expected. One thing that that they do not have many of are PNG dendrobiums. Do you have any suggestions for sellers? The ones you have posted are fantastic. Chad |
Hi Chad,
I've had quite a few plants from Ecuagenera that were mislabeled. Most of the time I don't mind since its something I don't have anyway and usually a better plant than I ordered, but nevertheless a bit annoying, since they should have their names straight. As to the PNG Debndrobium, they are really hard to find. D. cuthbertsonii iis available from several sellers, Mountain Orchids and Golden Gate Orchids, but the rest you've just got to search. I get some from Equatorial Plants in England, but they are seedlings and you have to be equipped to handle them. I'm thinking of placing another order this spring and am going to ask for the latest list, if you're interested. |
I am always interested in miniatures that harder to find. It seems that I want the ones I have to search for.
I have a Cuthburtsonii bicolor. The pink with white lip from Ecuagenera. It has grown great dwarfing its orginal size, but I do not care for the color separation in the flowers. The white is not very prodominate or bright. I am thinking of ordering some from Marni Tunkle that are different color varities. That is the only place I have seen PNG dendrobiums listed that I am looking for. The problem is most, if not all, are sold in flask. I don't mind that, but I would like some BS as well. I also missed getting a D. hellwingianum this time, but it will come eventually. If you ever have any interesting plant lists, I would be happy to PM you my email. I am always interested in Paphs, Phrags, Masd, Pluero, Rest, Bulbos and all other miniatures. I have a few larger plants besides paphs, but that is what I prefer. Thanks Chad |
Chad, I have the list from Equatorial Plants if you are interested. It's all hobby flasks, though, and if you want the list I'll need your email. I'll probably order later this spring.
