Potinara Kozo's Scarlet 'Ve-Emi'

I hope I picked the right forum. My Potinara Kozo's Scarlet 'Vi-Emi' SM/JOGA was purchased at Lowes and marked down since it was turning brown and looked like it had not been watered in ages. I brought it home and transplanted it to a clay Orchid pot with a mix of bark, charcoal and styrofoam bits. It took a while but it finally took off this Summer and got new growth and its still trying to produce yet another leaf. My question is this; when does this variety of orchid usually bloom? I know I am pushing things since this plant was so sick but since it is supposed to have a bright red flower I just can't wait! It hardly had any live roots when purchased and about 2 months ago it started sprouting roots like crazy. It gets about an hour or less of early morning sun in a northwest window. I have to water it 2X a week since there is barely any humidity in Denver and it dries out, I mist it once daily in the morning. Anyone know bloom times? Any other advice with this plant? Thanks folks!:bowing

Pot. Kozo's Scarlet 'Vi-Emy' HCC/AOS was awarded in December. My guess is that this plant will not be particular about the time of year it blooms. You need to decide for yourself if your tag is incorrect.

Pot. Usually bloom whenever a growth is completed, with a little luck, once the plant is is good health.

Thanks, the plant is very healthy, one new leaf finally opened and its getting another one that is about 4 inches long right now. It would be nice if it bloomed

Can someone recommend what type of light this Potinara needs? It get very little morning sun and bright light all day now, seems to be growing real well, has 2 new leaves and finally some nice root growth....any tips at Potinara's?

Do you have a light meter that you can tell how much light you are actually providing the plant? The cattleyas usually require in the neighborhood of 2,000 - 4,000 foot candles. Also, is your plant mature enough to bloom?

It had bloomed in the Home Depot store where I rescued it from but the blooms were dead and they had it on mark-down slowly dying. Roots didn't do much since I aquired it last March until about September, now there and new ones and growing a lot. It has 2 new leaves, since I got it and a total of 8 healthy thick strong leaves. I repotted it in March with a bark mixture, medium size. It seems to be doing really well. So can you define 2-4000 candles in terms of medium, bright light or sun?

My educated guess is that your name: Potinara Kozo's Scarlet 'Vi-Emi' SM/JOGA is the correct name. SM/JOGA stands for Silver Medal/ Japan Orchid Growers Association (Japan's professional orchid growers judging system). The Japanese judging standards are very uniformly applied throughout Japan, because judges travel so much between the various cities. SM is equivalent to the AM in the AOS system.

There is a Japanese grower who uses the Vi as part of the designation for some clones, in this case the Emi part is probably a woman's name Emi, or shortened from Emiko. (The Vi is Vee ... or pronounced Bee in Japan. I don't know what it refers to, but I should ask the grower when I see him next month)

If your plant was purchased from Lowes, it is probably a second generation clone from Taiwan (clone of a Japanese original clone). If a plant received an HCC/AOS award in December, I would further guess that it was also a second generation clone that was awarded. Only the hybrid name Pot. Kozo's Scarlet would have been registered. It is probably easy for the clonal name to have been phonetically misspelled from Vi-Emi to Vi-Emy.

Thanks for the information, explains a lot. What would you recommend for light requirements for this plant?

catwalker808 01-09-2012 03:08 PM

Potinara is a combination of Brassavola, Laelia, Cattleya & Sophronitis, in varying proportions. With the redesignated genus names, some of the Potinaras may become Blc or Bc (depending on which Laelias were involved. Sophronitis changes to Cattleya).

In a lattitude, with strong summer sun, full midday sunlight might be about 10,000 foot candles. 4000 fc would be with 60% shade, 2000 fc would be with 80% shade.

Indoors, under lights, this reference to shading is meaningless. But it would amount to bright light & the plants need warm to intermediate temps. Day length is another matter. We don't grow under lights here, but you probably need at least 8-10 hours in Denver.

Ok, thanks for explaining that, how many foot candles do you think you would put a Pot. like mine? I am kinda new to all this. I REALLY appreciate your help Catwalker!

Here is the RHS info for your plant. It is now Rlc so give it as much light as you can.

Zoi2.
Aha! Good of you to look it up. So the Brassavola part was probably B digbyana (now Rhyncholaelia digbyana). I covered the Laelia part changing to Cattleya, but I didn't even think about the Brassavola part.

(Just as I guessed from the clonal name, it was registered by my friend).

Zoi2 already gave pretty good advice about the light level. I was just giving additional info about what those foot candle levels meant ... bright light, definitely.

Thank you so much, I have learned many things due to our conversations and please know how much I appreciate your comments. I will leave him where he is now, for the time being, he gets bright light there. 2 new leaf growths and I am hopeful for a bloom at some point. I will let you know for sure.

I would say that North West light would be fine for a phal, but the catts need more. I have mine in a South window during the winter. We don't get much sun, though. You might be better with a little shading such as a shear curtain, since I believe you do get sun during the winter.

denvervet 01-10-2012 12:21 PM

We get more sun than southern california here in Denver. It only gets a small amount of morning sun and not for long where it is now. Its in a NE window. Thanks.

Vanda lover 01-10-2012 12:46 PM

The sunshine must be nice in the winter. When we moved here we traded or sun for a warmer climate with little snow. Rain forest. Now I need grow lights.

denvervet 01-10-2012 12:50 PM

Where are you? The sunshine is wonderful and its strong since we are a mile high, however I don't care or it here, I like the East Coast much better, people have much better manners and are friendlier. No one is "from" here so there is no sense of community similar to Florida. The weather and the State itself is gorgeous though! Food is terribly expensive here too. Orchids love it!

We're off the coast of British Columbia Canada. We are next to an inlet surrounded by mountains, so clouds get stuck here in the valley a lot during the winter. If we drive over the mountains it is often sunny there. Our summers are warm and sunny with little rain, but lots of rain in the winter. It's a mild climate. Zone 7b
We've been to Florida but found it too crowded for our taste.

Beautiful place to visit. Speaking of "inlet", "crowded" & "taste" ... those crabs from your inlet, crowded into your crab bucket were the freshest & tastiest Dungeness crabs that I've ever eaten.

Those snapping, grasping claws reaching up ... never seen anything like it ... except maybe for orchid hobby shoppers on opening day at an orchid show.

denvervet.
Sorry for the digression.

denvervet 01-14-2012 11:02 AM

It must be beautiful where you live. I imagine you have a lot of low light orchids? What kind of orchids do best there?

Vanda lover 01-14-2012 12:10 PM

It is beautiful here. Because we have such sunny summers, I am able to grow high light plants as well. If they get charged up over the summer they bloom beautifully. I have lc, ctna, phrag, paph, vasco, asco, vanda, epicatt, phals, doritinopsis, renanstylis, dendrobium, epidendrum, encyclia, masd, brassia, brassidium and cyms. It does get hot in the summer so I put some in the basement if it gets over 80.
