My Birthday present to myself! I picked up a few others, but this one was in bloom, and it has to be posted. This is Phal Gelblieber (amboinensis x micholitzii) from Peter Lin at Big Leaf Orchids. What a grower, what a plant!

Great present, happy birthday! My BD is in May but a Christmas present will suffice. :D

Beautiful Bloom! I've considered getting this orchid also. Could you tell me a little more about what you like so much about it?

Well it's a great formed flower, good substance, and the stripping is fun to watch develop from bloom to bloom. Also, it's the backbone of numerous great crosses, and as Cody has implied, I'm thinking about using it in the future to make some crosses.

Yes Cody, Buena Jewel is a thought, though I dont know what the violacea would contribute. Do you know which predominates in crosses? Also most Buena Jewel's I've seen appear to be alba forms, and makes me wonder how much the violet/red would wash with the cream of the Gel. Being new, it isn't entirely clear whether an alba violacea was used in all the original Buena Jewel crosses. Do you know? But! It does sound like a good idea! Thinking of using the violacea

AHHH, the wonders of micholitzii! As you noticed, most Buena Jewel are almost always quite pale, as is Gelblieber. Micholitzii is known to completely wipe out all colour, which is why Gelblieber is almost all white with just a few spots of colour. It's colour wiping capabilities last a few generations, which explains the colours of hybrids such as Joy Spring Canary.

Beautiful flower - the striping makes it especially enticing.

Updated pictures with it's newest flower. Seems to go greenish/yellow in my space. Hopefully it'll flatten and round itself out a bit. Pod failed on last attempt, so we'll have to see if that changes this time around... Hmm...
