If you could have one orchid. . .
I was wondering what orchid people would want if they could have any orchid. Any species, hybrid, whatever.
Mine would be an original Paph. Winston Churchill 'Indomitable' or 'Redoubtable' This is in addition to any other orchids you already have. Note that price doesn't matter. |
That is very, very difficult to answer! But I would say Cypripedium reginae (If I could only have ONE!).
|
A blooming size Paph hangianum.
|
Laelia alaorii.
:( can't find it anywhere for cheap though. |

i would want my old bc praetii, i have had it too long to part with it.....
|
My brain can't even absorb that idea! :nono:
|
please.gif Oh nooo not just one
|
I think they mean if we could "have any orchid" not "have only one orchid".

:whew: That was scary! Thanks for helping :) Now I'll have to give it some thought :coverlaugh: |
multi-growths (20+) Paph. micranthum along with a grower who can bloom every year for me. ( is it too much to ask??)
|
It's if you can have any, not have only one.

Okay then, well I already have 3 Cypripedium reginaes, so that doesn't count. The #1 plant on my wishlist right now is Cypripedium kentuckiense. But I also really want a Cyp. rebunense. Because the latter is rarer, I would probably take it over the kentuckiense. |
A full-sized Dendrochilum macranthum (aka Dendrochilum magnum). Saw one in full bloom once, more than two feet tall and overflowing a 12-inch wood basket, at least fifty inflorescences. Jaw-droppingly spectacular. Alas, no room for that until I get a greenhouse in my next life!
|
I want a ghost orchid in bloom like the one in Fakahatchee with 12 spikes!! *drool*
offered one once, but didn't want a second mortgage |
We should add a "without limitations of money" caveat.
|
OK, I'll add that.
|
For me I reckon Cypripedium calceolus. Not sure if that is the one in our OB logo or not, if not it's very close.
I think this is a UK native, and I just love it... not something you ever see wild though, I think they are very rare in the wild. |
Tough question. I can't pin it down to just one.
In my case, it would probably be a blooming-size Bollea lalindei. Not the easiest orchid to find. :blushing: Three other possibilities would be Vanda celebica, Galeottia nigrescens, and Paph. hangianum. Not easy to come by, either. |
Cattleya violacea var. coerulea (with excellent flower form)

I've seen it on Hardy Orchids in the past as well... just too scared to try it because it's not cheep and I've never grown Cyps. Hardy Orchids only ship Cyps between September and March so I may try and pluck up the courage later in the year.

For me, it would not be an orchid. If I had the no limitations on money and space, I would instead buy a greenhouse with climate control. So I could control exact humidity and temperature, as well as the amount of light that comes in. Then I would stick all my my Masdies in there, and buy a bunch of other orchids and plants.
If it had to be an actual orchid, I would go with Masd. coccinea or M. ignea. But only because I would have the perfect growing conditions in my new greenhouse, |

Well I would have to keep the plant I share a name with Brassovola David Sander
Now that I have reread the question. I will have to give it a little more thought. |
I smell a sticky in the future.
|
If I could have 1 orchid I would not be collecting orchids. Growing 1 orchid to me would be unbelievably boring.

For me with so many outstranding Cattleya Alliance species out there. I guess I would have to say either Laelia anceps guerrero 'Queen of the Valley' AM/AOS or Cattleya jenmanii alba 'Fuch's Snow' FCC/AOS

I think I agree with Tindomul. You know greenhouse and all then I could have a full size Honohono growing from a tree.
|
Mounted on an upright tree branch in my imaginary living room rain forest a big Guaranthe (Cattleya) skinneri, with ferns, lichens and moss also growing on the branch.......
:cloud9: |

Either one of those or a variegated, bean leaf Neofinetia with pink or yellow flowers like Neo. 'Ryokyhou-no-shima'. Althouth 'Fukiden' and 'Suisen' are pretty nice too. Cheers. Jim |
Man, can't narrow it down. But if other people are having greenhouses and imaginary living room rainforests maybe I could move somewhere a bit warmer, in a house with a conservatory? And big windows???
