hi guys? anyone using beer on orchids?

what does it do??? thanks!!!...

kavanaru 12-01-2009 05:51 AM

Not possible... somehow, the bottle is always empty by the time it arrives near my orchids... Since it only takes some minutes from teh freedge to the orchid shelve, I assume the swiss and german beer evaporates very very fast...

P.S.- would also be curious to hear what you use it for in the Philippines...

:biggrin:San Miguel I'll wager,but it also evaporates very fast,especially when it's cold!

:blushing:OK then.Found my reading glasses, made coffee, lets try this again. How about a source of B1 vitamin?Cheap, easy to get almost anywhere, and also makes a great snail and slug bait.

Mabuhay!

I spray beer on my orchids but should be done in late afternoon, i guess, it is to deter some pests specifically slugs. And some says its also acts as a fertilizer. Anyway, one thing is for sure that is its a great-bonding moment with you and your orchids. hehehehehehe. don't forget to mix it with water...don't spray pure beer...based on my experience it somehow burns the orchid.

Well, long-time ago someone told me that its a good fertilizer if you mix urine with water.....it was beneficial to my roses.

coz i have a friend who tells me that they use stale beer / leftover ones to spray in their orchids (yes its diluted). ive done a tiny research that it also helps make grass lush? so im just curious about it!

As much as I love my orchids, I really don't think they appreciate a great brew as much as I do. And as Ramon said, it rarely makes it that far from the fridge.

just one thing, I do not know about asian slugs, but at least european slugs are actually atracted to beer! They can travel several meters atracted by the smell of beer! That's why it is used as slugs bait!

alobe for this reason, I would think of drinking it inmediately after opening, in order to avoid slugs near my orchids ;)

seamonkey 12-01-2009 06:49 PM

My orchids don't need any expensive habits- they already ARE one!

I don't use beer on my orchids. Imagine they start complaining about a hang over the next day and ask for more!. I've heard people use asperin on plants too, maybe that would relieve their headache then...

But now serious... I don't use beer on my orchids and never heard/read from others they use it...

:twocents:All kidding aside,or maybe not, according to Gerry Baker in the book"Terrific Garden Tonics" beer serves as an enzyme activator to release nutrients in the soil/potting mix.He also uses urine, cola ,tobacco tea,and a ton of other stuff to concoct bug sprays, fertilizer, lawn and garden tonics, and animal repellents. Here is a sample:Add one can of beer plus one ounce liquid dish soap to one gallon water.Use in place of plain water when mixing fertilizer.

I use Jerry Baker tonics which include beer, amonia, epson salt, lemon dish liquid on my lawn and have a very very green lawn. It works.

I am not a chemist nor a botanist but beer does work well as a fertilizer on Vandas. Pour stale beer in one of the small vials with the slit, green rubber top that florists use and insert a fat, green tipped, healthy Vanda root into the vial. It will absorb all of the beer and probably provides the plant with sugars that it needs. If there are any botanists among us maybe one will explain the benefit.

Please tell me how many times I have to feed the plant to see positive effects?

ezil 08-09-2011 05:32 PM

Thanks all of you who have posted. I had some good laughs, almost bought a 6 pack, and learned something along the way. Does anyone use vodka by any chance? I heard that does wonders for the plants too, and the good thing about vodka is that you only need a tsp. per liter of water. Don't ask where the rest is going.

Leisurely 08-11-2011 09:35 PM

Growth should be obviously improved in about three weeks.

Orchid126 08-12-2011 02:58 PM

I use grain alcohol, a half teaspoon to a gallon, once a month. Supposedly, this provides sugar directly to the plant without it having to break anything down.

wallyworld 08-18-2011 06:43 PM

Well....I rather drink my beer!!! I know I heard that it supposedly helps with bacteria growth in soil.

Paul Mc 08-18-2011 07:11 PM

Oh great! There goes my beer and my vodka! DARN! I guess me and my orchids will be singing together in the evenings, and suffering together in the morning.

Thanks for this thread! It has indeed been fun to read and quite amazing to read that you can use these things!

There is a recipe using beer that Cactus growers use - beer, ammonia, epsom salts etc - that is used by some orchid growers (one Paph grower I knew uses only this recipe). I have used it for orchids and it does work nicely. But I never go with just one fertilizer exclusively. Couldn't tell you what long term success/failure is.
