Well, it's finally finished.....now all it needs is more plants! I've been slowly collecting materials, and finall got motivated to put it all together. The back wall is moss, sandwiched between two sheets of chicken wire. It worked out quite well cuz you can form it to whatever shape you desire. There is running water trickling down the log in the center, and a small waterfall on the left side. The ultrasonic fogger, in conjunction with the running water, keep the RH above 90%. The temps maintain about 70-75 degrees fahrenheit, and the lid has two pc fans (intake and exhaust) that come on for 15 minutes, every two hours. This renews the air pretty nicely, and the temps stay at a nice level.....so I can finally grow some cooler growing species. I currently have two ghost orchids, Bulbo. Jersey, Bulbo. maximum, Epi. porpax var alba, Den. loddigesii, a C. nobilior var amalie seedling, an ant vine, and a couple of ferns. I have a Bulbo. lasiochilum on the way, and I'll probably put a carnivorous plant in there, eventually.

That looks awsome. Have you thought about perhaps adding some dart frogs?

Yes, I've thought about it...I just don't know if I want one more thing that I have to worry about feeding. I have enough orchids to take care of, just haven't decided if I want to have to worry about a live animal/ amphibian. We'll see.

It's really cool Jasen, you did a great job!

That's pretty cool Jasen...what are the dimensions?

I look forward to pics of it filled with plants...I'm guessing that'll take you about 3 days? :coverlaugh:

 It's 3'w x 2'h x 1'd. Unfortunately, I've never had a reason to buy miniatures....until now. So I only have a couple plants to put in it, right now. I'm trying to be selective, and get some of the cooler growing ones that I've been wanting for a while. I would really like a couple Pleiones, but I don't know if this tank is quite cool enough. It will probably end up being mostly Bulbos and Masdies, with a Dracula or two. I gotta get some live moss, too!

Why did you use a green light? Plant can't grow under green light.

I didn't, it's mostly the white balance on my camera. It's a mercury vapor light that I'm using temporarily....my t5 hood should be arriving any day. I ordered a 2-bulb t5 with 6500k bulbs, but I am going to buy a 3000k also. As a matter of fact, I gotta check the mail....got a Bulbo comin, too.

Akhenaten 07-14-2009 11:23 AM

OK :)

 We can change that.

...And to that, I give you this year's most popular reply...."Yes we can!"

That is sooooo awesome. It reminds me of the tropical rain forest back home in the Philippines.

Bingo

Thank you! I have no idea what region I was trying to portray, but it's nice to hear that it looks like a rainforest....Philippines will do!

Woohoo! My new light just came in.....man what a difference!! This light is brighter than I thought it was going to be. It blows that power suckin' porch light AWAY! But the bulbs are only 55w, and it's helpin' my temps, too! You can really see the difference in the pics, too. You can't beat that for $69.

Well, you see about how much thinkin' that took. I didn't get a dart frog....but Dana's gonna love this one! They had this little guy at the pet shop, and a friend of mine couldn't resist getting me one...after seeing the terrarium. I like these guys just as much as a dart frog, they're a lot friendlier looking. Also, the eyes are just mesmirizing! Not sure of the sex yet, but I guess I'll know if it starts calling.

Maybe tomorrow I can get some pics of him spread out. It has beautiful blue and yellow markings down it's side.

Thanks! It's about 2 1/2" from snout to vent....as they say. Here's a better pic:

Update:
After extensive research on my new little friend, I decided I needed to revise my terrarium a little bit. Everything I read said that the frog's habitat should be mostly land, with just a small, shallow body of water. Mine was about 60% water! So, to rectify this.....I simply built up the other side (leaving a pond and waterfall in the middle), and added more plants. I also got some live moss for groundcover...don't want any beach erosion! I think I like it much better this way.
Oh yeah, and in hopes of working towards a complete ecosystem (since I can't use algaecides and fungicides in there, due to the frog), I added some ghost shrimp and aquatic snails to the water. Hopefully, between those and the aquatic plants I got, it will keep the funk under control.....and eat any frog waste, so I don't have to constantly change the water. I got some mealworms for the frog, too....these crickets keep chewing on my orchids. I try to only put in there the amount he's going to eat, but it varies. He has acclimated wonderfully, and has even given me a little call so I would know he was a male.....overall, he seems to be nice and happy. He should be, I've been loading up his bugs with all kinds of fruit, nuts, and veggies!
Anyway, here's the new pics....

Also, the new light seemed a little bright for him, but I really didn't want to leave a bulb out to compensate (and make the orchids suffer in the process).....so, to break it up a little for the little guy, I cut different size strips of some tent-like material I had, and criss-crossed them to give a branching shadowed effect. It's much more "junglier" now.:biggrin:Attachment 33955

Getting better and better. When doing something new, you always have change things around until you find that perfect balance. Looking better and better with each post. I just know that it will be full of orchid blooms before we know it. :)

Need any resurrection fern?

Thanks!:waving Well, when it started, it wasn't being made for a frog....but it wasn't far off. I like it better this way, too. Eventually, I would like that whole wall to be green. I would love some resurrection fern, that will give it some nice variation. I finally found some live frog moss...man what a difference that made! I had no idea that they sold that stuff dry (dormant), in a bag on the shelf....like it was dead. A little water, and it came right to life. Amazing.

gixrj18 07-20-2009 10:01 AM

Also, I'm really glad my buddy picked up this frog for me. I was actually looking for a dart frog, but was open to getting one of these. Now, the more I look at the dart frogs, they are kind of ugly (compared to this guy). Not the colors.....they are beautiful. But the physical appearance and features just look like an ugly old toad. The red-eye has wonderful colors, they're cute as a button, and they've got a lot of character. I had no idea before that they had the beautiful blue & yellow markings on their side.....I thought they were just green & orange. I am glad it went the way it did.
