Where to find Cyrtopodium punctatum?

I got myself a Cyrtopodium punctatum ("Cowhorn Orchid") just twenty days ago. Then TS Fay dumped 10"+ of rain on us and I didn't notice that my plant was in standing water (not good enough drainage for all the rain) for 4 days. It promptly keeled over. The vendor I bought it from doesn't have any more.

Anyone know where I can purchase another?

I can't live with the idea that I've managed to kill a plant that is native to where I live! I MUST give it another try. Any help is appreciated!!

Dorothy 08-30-2008 07:00 PM

"The pseudobulbs of Cyrtopodium punctatum were used in the past as a source of glue for book binding."
According to Cyrtopodium punctatum in Flora of North America @ efloras.org

Perhaps you can try Martin Orchids - Martin Orchids -- Home

Thanks Dorothy - I emailed them and it was returned by their listed IP as undeliverable. Makes me leery but I do very much appreciate you efforts. Too late on the plants practical uses though as I threw away the dead stub. No book repairs here

I went down the list of vendors at the Orchid Mall and found one other seller out of HI but that vendor has mixed reviews here on the OB.

Any other leads would be appreciated!

I bought one at EFG Octoberfest a couple of years ago - believe the vendor was Miller tropical and have noticed that several vendors had them at The Redlands Orchid festival last year - was not able to attend this year.

Got it and bought it. Thanks for the Ebay heads up. I've bought from that vendor before with good results. Thanks again!!

Your welcome. That is the flower I summited for the calendar contest. Mine was a wild one found in Big Cypress.

Dorothy 09-02-2008 06:25 PM

Be sure to post photos of your new acquisition! :)
I'm so glad you were able to find it !

eBay Store - Orchids By Eli: Category 13, Category 1, Category 4

'Orchids by Eli' is who I got it from. He's out of Puerto Rico and I have bought more a couple dozen plants from him. He usually has a number of species and hybrids - some unusual ones too. The plants are usually a bit larger for the money and his shipping costs on multiple plants are very reasonable - to my location anyway.

I was actually wondering about the Hawaii vendor you spoke of. :hmm

D&S Mabel 09-03-2008 07:08 PM

My mistake on that...

I confused myself as I was also looking for a Trichopilia suavis and that was the search netted the HI vendor.

The only other vendor I found for Cyrtopodium punctatum is out of Florida and I did order a couple plants for them not too long ago but was unhappy with size vs. price on what I got.

Oh, ok. No problem.

Just a note for everyone on Martins Orchids, and the e-mails being kicked back. Marty Martin has passed away recently, and his wife Martha may or may not continue in the orchid business. This has been a terrible turn of events for them. So that is the reason for a lack of replies. I am sure all can understand

My condolescences to Mrs. Martin and her family!
A very sad time for them, indeed!

After a few years we expect to see it looking like this one. :goodluck:

D&S Mabel 09-10-2008 08:30 PM

I don't think my wife will let me fill in the pool to accomodate it... but if the couple Grammatophyllum I have keep growing like they are, somethings going to have to give!

Anyone know where I can pick up a Cyrtopodium punctatum, I would really appreciate any help.

D&S Mabel 08-19-2009 11:16 AM

I have gotten a couple from this Ebay seller. If he doesn't have one listed for sale, email him and ask (as I did the last time I bought one) as he usually has them.

"Orchids by Eli" at eBay My World - orchidsbyeli

I've bought a number of plants from him over the years and have been VERY happy with what I received.

Cyrtopodium puntata

I bought my first one from Grezaffi Orchids in Melbourne, but he no longer sells retail. Indian River Orchids in Vero Beach bought his Cyrtopodiums so you might try contacting them.

Well, I just picked up my cyrtopodium, but it's not a punctatum. It's either a andersonianum, or a longifolium.

It came are root with canes 30" long. It's native to Peru. Since there is no marking tag, I'll have to wait for a bloom to properly identify it.

I'll post pics after I get it planted.

Saw him at Redlands and he had some HUGE specimens.

Just got an email from Lee. It's a Cyrtopodium andersonianum.

got ants 09-02-2009 10:26 PM

I'm finally getting around to posting pics of how I propagated them....

Plants against my hand for perspective
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/IMG_1330.jpg

A 1/2 teaspoon of each in a gallon of water..
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/IMG_1333.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/IMG_1331.jpg

The pots they are going into with attempted wire base to hold them up...
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/IMG_1332.jpg

Coconut silk bottom liner...
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/IMG_1334.jpg

Planted in Reifers Magic Mix medium

Finally planted with 8" wire stake to hold them up, since the original wire concept wouldn't hold them up
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/IMG_1335.jpg

They've been planted 5 days now and the have new growth on the 3 bunch to the right, has grown an addittional 3"

isurus79 09-03-2009 12:51 AM

That's pretty cool. I'm not familiar with Reifers Magic Mix medium. It looks kinda like potting soil in the last pic though. Is it?

got ants 09-03-2009 01:55 AM

Reifers Magic, as I'm told, is nothing like potting soil. It should dry out quickly, but also have some goodies type fert that is the what it's magic in it. ''Though I am doubting this. I watered when I did the transplant, and not since, After 5 days, it hasn't dried out (judging by weight).

The funny thing is, I already see rabid new growth, My gut instinct, from it not drying as fast as I thought it should, is redo it with more of a dryer medium.

But, with the new fast growth, I'm second quessing myself. And that always gets me in trouble.

I'll give it a short while and see what it does..

Always a learning process, especially for this newb who's only been doing this for just over a year.

hi,
I think your plant is on endangered list of species therefore it is a protected species and you will not get to buy the plant.
veekay
note:cytopodium pnctatum and bradfordii are see in dry land and protected by law agians removing the plant.

I've seen them for sale at several orchid shows this year and online, so, they are available.
