Repotting large Phal with new roots
Default Repotting large Phal with new roots

I was given a large Phal (in bloom) at the end of February. It didn't smell good, and when I took a look at the roots they were all rotten and slimy. Found a YouTube video showing cutting off all the roots, spraying with Hydrogen Peroxide, then suspending the plant upside down with the bottom of the leaves in water, and domed over Did that at the beginning of April, and after 8 weeks I have four big healthy-looking roots growing sideways out of the crown. So, I figure it's ready to re-pot, and the video didn't show that.
Since it has been in a high-humidity environment, I was thinking it would be best to re-pot with loose sphagnum moss rather than typical orchid mixes. Or is there another way I should replant this thing? The old leaves are all still on but they look pretty desiccated so I'm not sure if they'll come back. What do you think? Plant is indoors with natural light from a north-facing window.

Pictures would help but indoors in the winter sphagnum may not be ideal unless you keep your house very warm or add bottom heat. Bottom heat will help with root growth right now too.

Sorry, I know I've uploaded photos before but it's been a while and I just can't figure out how to do it.

Um, as it isn't winter, I guess the bottom heat isn't a question here? Wanting to know whether the sphagnum sounds like a good plan for repotting a phal that for the past 2 months has been domed in a high humidity environment, or should I use a different medium.

You can if you think it will work long term for your environment, or if it’s only a temporary setup, but you can also pot into bark and water more frequently to maintain moisture in the root zone. Just depends on what you want to do.
