Ok, I had to wait on the media to arrive. I gently teased the roots bare (of media)...they weren't attached at all to the media seems. Then carefully unwrapped stolon and root from coming through the bottom of the old pot. Sat it in my very shallow (1 1/2 deep?) plastic tray, put a combo of fresh bark and the bark from the old pot (not broken down...though obviously more so than the new media) back into the tray, trying to cover the roots (had to work them a bit..from being in the tall pot before). I then found the stolon (was only one..other was just a root) so that it was now visible at top of the media. Picture is worth a 1000 words someone said..so I have taken one
Even though I added considerably more media, with the shallow tray (and yes I poked three holes into it), I feel like it should be fairly well drained.
I ended up using the lid of the tray as the saucer...so that sure worked out.

People may find this hard to believe, but Paphs are hard to kill if you just keep them moist, use appropriate media and repot every 1-2 years.

Well I've certainly killed one or two the time I tried them in the distant past (20 years or so ago), but so far so good with my hopefully now stable population of a half dozen (the windows are pretty much filled). Being a paph newbie (again not counting the two from 20 yrs ago), I've only had my oldest for six months or so now. However, none have grown to look worse, let alone die. *knock on wood* Actually I have new leaves on all that I've had for three months or more.

Seriously. I have one (Paph Avalon Druid)-- I got really sick and lost most of my orchids because of disinterested, careless "helpers," But After I had about 4-5 plants left out of a 70 or so plant collection, I just said "heck it" and threw them immediately into deep water culture. I did not do diddly-squat for them except keep them in a window and make sure they were topped up. I still have the same 5 plants. One that paph. It got to one pathetic wilty leaf set, but is now strong, clean, glossy, and going on its third growth. (no flowers yet though). Just high light and lots of water.
