Default making a large vanda basket for L. crispa

I have a L. cripsa that is reaching the end of its 12" pot. If possible, I'd like to keep growing it without dividing it. I'm thinking of making my own vanda basket to accommodate a large plant - a 16"x16" vanda basket with square wooden dowels.

Has anyone grown L. crispa (or closely related species) in wooden baskets? How do they do?

i grow a lot of catt in baskets- i think they like it better than pots. i have started to make mine in metal wire mesh baskets

i think that crispa would be very happy in one

dowels? of what kind of wood? most dowels at HD are going to be pine and would be too soft, i think

I was going to use this one:

Access Denied

It does say oak (??), but I recall the dowels being pretty soft. I was thinking of gluing together many supporting pieces between the planks to make a lattice.but... It does look pretty pricey to make a 16" square latticed basket...

How do you make your wire basket? Chicken wire?

It’s called hardware cloth. But it’s metal. I like 1/2” squares.

Here is a brassavola tube I made. Same principle

Oh! I have hardware cloth but the lower gauge ones are brittle I think. I use it to prop up rambling orchids with moss.

I may try a premade wire basket too.

There's a thread here somewhere Jeff that I posted late this past summer on shallow Catt. hanging baskets I made. I found some square 11" white cedar dowels on Etsy. I wanted a 10" x 10" basket so cut them down. I tried contacting them to see if they could do other lengths but never got a response. They came from Maine.
Shoot me a PM if you're interested and I can shoot you the info.
