DC, are you sure? The sponge in my kitchen doesn't do that. To absorb water, the sponge must be pressed to expel the air from its cells to be replaced by water. That is not wicking.
Anyway, just to be sure I tried it and it only absorbed water at the bottom and only after I press it (otherwise it will float and I can't keep it upright to do the experiment).

After seeing the video, maybe a cleaning microfiber fabric, used especially in our kitchens, solves this problem. I will give it a try and keep you updated.

Try a strip of a synthatic chamois. Like the advertised sham wow.

Decided to give a try to the simplest solution: sphagnum.
Not the best looking one but let's see how it goes.:)

At the bottom there's large pieces of bark and the rest is sphagnum. The container is filled with water up to the middle.
