Homemade Mosaic Orchid Pots
Default Homemade Mosaic Orchid Pots

Hi all! Just thought I'd share a project I started today. I'm making mosaic orchid pots. I started drilling holes in my pots today, it went really well but I decided to wait for a nicer day when I can work outside to finish the drilling. Just waiting for my tiles to get here. I've never done mosaic before. If you have any advice about tiled orchid pots or want to share your own homemade pit projects I'd love to see them.

I see now that 'member projects' relates to breeding projects so this should probably be moved to the pots/potting section I guess

Nice idea. Will you grout between the tiles after they are attached? You will have to be careful to keep the holes free.

Yes I will grout it all down. This is my very first mosaic project so I'm in uncharted territory but I think I'll be able to keep the holes pretty clear. I'm using a tile/ceramics drill bit from a previous project and as a result the holes are smaller than I would like, which will probably make it harder to keep them open. Worse case scenario, I might need to go back in w the drill to clear them out a bit.

Have you ever done any mosaic?

i have done some flat mosaic and i have covered some larger terracotta pots as well

i would not advise it for an orchid pot for one very simple reason. it is way too nice to destroy and orchid pots (the ones you really pot in as opposed to sticking a plastic pot inside a decorative one) get broken or get put into larger pots.....

one thing to consider

one note about the actual project...it more than doubles the weight of the pot..not a big deal for the 4-8" but i tiled a 24" Mexican pot and it weighed close to 100 lbs empty......i hate that pot so much LOL

Rosie, I had a job once, many years ago, making vases and candle holders out of glass placed on glass containers. Not artistic, just production line stuff to produce a "stained glass" effect.

Nice work with the drill. If I can suggest rotate the hole pattern on the sides 90 from the pattern on the bottom.

Imperfections in the pot will be exposed and crack with two holes so close together. If you just move it all 90 then they will be further apart without losing any drainage or ventilation

And what would make you think imperfections are vertical or even linear?

They are random and the farther apart the holes are the less likely that two hidden stress fractures will intersect and cause a structural failure.

Same in glass, the closer the holes the more likely the vibrations will break the work

And sorry, I misspoke. I mean 45*
