Phalaenopsis Leaf Spots?
Default Phalaenopsis Leaf Spots?

Hello!

My phalaenopsis has recently become very spotty / mottled. The spots are indented so the leaf is very textured. This orchid was grown from a very healthy kiki and was potted on its own 2 years ago. This leaf situation is within the last 3 months or so. Any advise would be very welcome!

Thank you,
Katie

What are your growing conditions? Temperature day/night, humidity, light? How are you watering?

Is it close to a cold window?

Thanks for responding. It has been close to a window. I keep it on the dry side - watering about 1X every 2 weeks. The house is about 70 during the day and drops to about 58-60 during the night. There are 2 other kikis from the same mother plant that look healthy. There are also about 15 phals growing in this window with some blooming. This happened to one other plant and I threw it away. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

While your other phals have adapted to your conditions, they are definitely COLD for most phals. Unless you start seeing it more often, I’d assume it’s just a plant that wants to be warmer.

Thanks you! I’ve moved it away from the window. Do you think it’s worth saving?

Depends on if you want to add more accessories to your setup. Seedling heating mats aren’t budget busters, and they can do wonders.

58-60 F is too cold for Phals. They do best in the vicinity of 85 F. Growers figure out how to bring them through cool winters by limiting watering, but you should expect regular losses at those temperatures, though some will survive. Many growers in cold climates use heat mats.

Hello Kateo. Most of my orchids are against an East window during Winter. Sunlight is great, but temps are not. It can get down to 25F at night outside. This has worked for me: Place them on seedling heat mats during Winter season and pull them back from windows a few inches. Happy growing, ROBB

Great advice! Thank you. Would you Lee the orchid I posted pictures of or toss it? It looks bad but might recover?

Where there's green there's hope. I don't toss anything that isn't obviously permanently dead unless I have a positive virus test and it's not something that I want to nurture.
