Bacterial Brown Spot in a Psychopsis mendenhall
Default Bacterial Brown Spot in a Psychopsis mendenhall

Hi all,

I've had this P. mendenhall for about 2 years and noticed these spots on the newest pbulb and leaf that is still in the process of emerging. Including this newest pbulb, there are 5 pbulbs and its been growing steadily without a hitch until now.

My top differential was bacterial brown spot though I am very open to other thoughts. Anyone have input on why the lesions would appear in various areas of the pbulb and leaf rather than spreading from a single site? Also, I was debating continued monitoring for spread vs removal of the infected tissue. I worry about trying to remove the tissue at the base of the leaf as the pbulb is still developing.

Pics 1&2 are of the same lesion. Pics 3&4 are of the same lesion. The fifth picture is of the base and includes the lesion from Pics 3&4 in it.

Thank you all for your help and insights!

Could be insect-, or water-borne...

Oof. Were it mine, I'd put a bit of cinnamon paste on the leaf spot, and also on the spot where new pbulb will be coming in. Maybe even try to get a little cinnamon back in behind that pbuld leaf if possible. Then I'd put a black sharpie marker outside the margin and see if it spreads beyond it. That's a start.

I had one several years back outside during the summer, and didn't notice there was a gutter drip right where it sat under the eaves. Got a similar looking spot on the same place you have on the pbulb leaf as shown in last picture... only thing I could figure was too much water was dripping down into the crevice and not getting dry. I finally excised a piece of it off with an Exacto knife, being careful to cut slowly so I didn't cut into anything below. It worked to fix it (plus moving out from under the leak in the gutter).

You might also consider treating the plant with a probiotic…
