Yellow middle leaves and black spots on phal
Default Yellow middle leaves and black spots on phal

I have a newly acquired phal and it seems like the blooms have stalled and are not opening. Last week I noticed a middle leaf was turning yellow and there were a few black spots on the leaf near the stalk. Yesterday I saw a few more spots on the adjacent leaf and it looks like it might be turning yellow as well. Any idea what is going on and what I should do?

Default Collar Rot

It appears to be collar rot. I purchased three phals with buds. They arrived 30 days ago. They were packed in sphagnum moss I watered all three after about two weeks when the moss was drier. During the 30 days several buds opened on each plant and then the buds stopped opening and flowers lasted only about a week on one plant.

Yesterday I re-potted each plant into S/H containers. I found that each plant was packed tight in moss and was a dense saturated mess. One had a decent root base. One had total root rot. I'm amazed the leaves were even green and it had a few buds left on that one. The one with collar rot still has a lot of roots but another leaf is turning yellow even after a fungicide drench.

I guess the nursery adds a fungicide to their feeding schedule, which I did not. The takeaway from this experience is to remove the sphag moss and inspect the roots as DirtyCoconuts mentioned he does in the other thread. If the roots are that saturated they shouldn't have any problem moving to my S/H set up and thriving.

If that was my plant, I’d grab the rest of the plant base and pull that leaf off. This may be unnecessary at that point, but then I’d mix cinnamon powder and Elmers Glue to form a paste, then carefully dab it on the wound with a Q-tip, being careful not to get any on the roots at all.

Also ------- make sure to have an airy enough medium, and provide some gentle air flow in the growing area for the leaves, stem and roots and media.

And watch out for the clear pot ----- as that can cut down on air-movement, and even impact drainage (negatively). Maybe could put lots of big holes in the sides of the clear plastic outter pot to allow air to flow in and out along the sides (not just getting in through the opening at the top).

Also keep an eye on the roots ----- such as on the surface ..... make sure that they don't appear to be rotting etc.

Thanks for all of the info. I have been lucky the past few years and haven't had to deal with these type of issues. If nothing else I am smarter than I was before. The one with collar rot has yellow tinge at the leaf bases. It certaintly moves quickly.
