Orchid species for October

Miltonia season!! Yours seem happy even in the heat of southern California. I think they would fry where I live.

With some shade, they might just do OK. That big Milt. moreliana I got from someone who lived more inland than I do. I grow it pretty bright... the yellow leaves are part light and part under-fertilizing. Maybe the abuse helped the flowering.

I was more surprised at how well the Draculas have been holding up. (I conclude that they are much more forgiving than Masdevallias)

Most Miltonias are warm to hot growing orchids. Miltonia moreliana and spectabilis can take very high temperatures and lots of sun.

Genus Miltoniopsis was split off from Miltonia some time ago. Those are the pansy orchids. They do not do well in heat.

Epidendrum is such a huge genus... a matter of finding the ones that grow under your conditions. I grow Epi. porpax "on" rather than "in" a basket with some sphagnum... it forms a mat. That one and Epi gnomus (similar) grow outside for me but could grow warmer. Epi schlecterianaum, discolor neoporpax look similar but grow warmer - need GH. So... actually, I suspect that there are some in this group that would grow fine for you.

The main issue with porpax is humidity. I don't think it would survive a heated home winter outside a terrarium.

Don't know... they're pretty tough. Sphag in a shallow pot (to allow for rambling) might be sufficient with adequate watering to keep the sphag on the damp side.

oh man, and they call me an enabler

you are right that i shouldn’t cast aside an entire genera based on the failure of one plant. but focusing on too many and being able to meet their needs is enough for the time being! trying to devote time to the catasetinae and the couple dendrobiums we have. maybe one day ill come back to this post when we need our next challenge! still, i love those flowers 💐
