We had a great show. Lots of visitors. Our membership table signed up 48 new members! I was too busy talking to take photos.

Most had questions on growing orchids. We told them to come to meetings to learn more. We gave a free plant to everybody who signed up at the show. They were mostly SVO mini Catts in bud and H&R Dens in flower.

That's quite a lot, good news in these time where my local societies are waning over the years. I wish Orchid fever will make a comeback again in the near future.

Metro Phoenix is huge but the traffic isn't as bad as in southern California. We meet in a relatively central location. It takes an hour or less to drive from the outskirts to a meeting.

I live only 3 miles from the church we meet at. I had no say in the selection, just lucky. That means if we need A/V cables or whatnot for the speaker I get to drive home and find them.

One of the side effects of horrible traffic in southern California (and thus the time needed to get from one place to another especially at rush hour) is the "Balkanization" of the orchid club scene. There are lots of small, weak clubs as opposed to a few larger, strong ones. This pattern started long before the current traffic patterns, but I think was still driven, at least in part, by the time needed to get from one place to another. Historically I think that it was also driven by jealousies among the various club founders. (I can't think of a more reasonable explanation of why Long Beach has two clubs that meet within 5 miles/8 km of each other, I don't think anybody is still alive who remembers why but they keep on doing the same way and occasional attempts to consolidate have fallen flat. ) At any rate, the metropolitan Los Angeles pattern has no real center. (200 suburbs looking for a city) So along with the logistics of getting from point a to point b, there is also a culture, leading to the fragmentation that those of us in this area experience. It certainly works against having a strong "orchid scene". A beneficial side effect of COVID - Zoom meetings. Some large clubs have stayed with hybrid meetings after re-opening in person. (So I can "attend" meetings in San Francisco and San Diego, which I enjoy very much)

And here I thought the Bay Area had it bad with 1-2 societies per county…
