Alan Koch of Gold Country Orchids will speak to the Desert Valley Orchid Society of metro Phoenix, Arizona on Thursday, June 18, 2020. The club meeting begins at 6:45 pm local time and Alan's talk will begin some time after that.

For those of you that can’t attend, or are not yet leaving your homes, we will do a Facebook Live event and the recording will be available to view on our page. To watch the video please visit: Desert Valley Orchid Society - Home | Facebook

Arizona is in the Mountain Time Zone, but does not observe Daylight Saving Time. In summer we are on the same time as California, GMT -7.

Alan will speak on:
Cattleyas 365, 24/7
Get the knowledge on how to build a collection that will flower all year long and how to grow them. Learn the species that have been used by hybridizers for years to control bloom time. Talk is adapted to our climate!

Alan Koch owns and operates Gold Country Orchids where he specializes in miniature and compact Cattleyas. Alan started growing orchids in 1969 with 3 Cymbidiums given to him by an aunt. While in college he became interested in other orchids and discovered many would grow outdoors in Southern California. He has moved five times as his orchid obsession has led to the need for more growing space. With the last move, he purchased 10 acres of land in Lincoln, California for his 250,000 orchids. He is recognized as an expert in the Brazilian Cattleya alliance and a trend setter in miniature Cattleya breeding.

Alan has been published in the Orchid Digest, the American Orchid Society magazine, as well as many international publications. He has also been published in several proceedings of the World Orchid Conference. He is an internationally known speaker. He is a past member of the AOS Judging Committee, the Research Committee, as well as an Accredited Judge and is Training Coordinator for the California Sierra Nevada Judging Center. Alan also served two terms on the Orchid Digest Executive Committee and 3 terms on the Board of Directors, as well as two terms as a Trustee for the AOS.

Thanks for the info, I'm so excited that for once there is a way for me to 'visit' and hear such a high level speaker. My climate is about as different from Arizona as you can be, but I'm sure there will still be lots of useful info

Actually, Alan lives in northern California. He's extremely knowledgeable, a great guy, and those who have heard him all say he's an excellent speaker - I haven't managed to make any of his talks in his very rare trips into my area, so I'm looking forward to it as well.

We are allowed to have only 25 in the meeting room. I would suggest people watch the broadcast rather than try to come in person. Alan will be bringing plants to sell, and people unable to enter the room will be able to buy from him.

We broadcast two of our meetings on Facebook Live before the shutdown. We hope to do this every month. We usually have club members speak at July - September meetings. November we have a silent auction, and December a party, instead of a meeting. We generally bring in speakers for October and January - June meetings.

I was looking on the Society Facebook page and don't see links to the past videos, or where to link for tonight.

I'll ask the person doing that. I'm not on Facebook. It's Thursday 6/18 not tonight, unless I slept for three days.

Our Facebook wrangler replied people will be able to view the meeting on our main page during the meeting. It will be available on the video section of the page later. There is now a video available in the video section of Fred Clarke's talk last fall.

Edit: I don't use Facebook, but several of our club members have said they can find Fred's talk in the video section of our page.
