don't feel bad, it makes you stronger and it balances out that innate materialism when you know it can literally all be gone.

My hurricane Andrew story is short - I was in between 4-5th grade and i was visiting a friend who lived in Atlanta (my first trip without my parents) i was away for the storm but my mother's house (parents divorced when i was 2, split the week at each house) was erased....a tornado went through the patio into the living room and pulled the wings of the house into there....strangely left our 7 ton AC in the middle of the living room..i had to live in a rental house 45 minutes north for 3.5 years bc our first contractor took 160K from the insurance company, pushed the house structure into the former pool and left the country....fun Florida fun.

Andrew was a once in a lifetime strong storm but the real ass kicking was bc it made a last minute turn and no one took it seriously...bad combination there.

i have some hilarious stories about related things but enough of a derail....

Not a derail DC. If I go now I wouldn't stay because my regular time would be last week of Oct.

So, the 2:00 PM ADT update from NHC moved the track what looks to be about 75 miles south and west. Reasoning was this morning they ran their first hurricane hunter flight into it and they found the center of circulation 80 miles south of where they thought it was.
Not to divert my potential misery to someone else but I'm breathing a little easier even if that puts us on the dirty side, it's 100 miles which is not nearly as bad.
Fingers crossed that it keeps drifting south and west and that it doesn't intensify. Hopefully current path beats it up against the mountains of Hispaniola and Cuba and keeps it under control.
Will see how things look in the morning and make my call. Have a flight all picked out and I could be there mid-afternoon which gives me plenty of time.

God speed. There is no evil in wishing the storm to miss you. It is human nature. Everyone does it. Just don’t wish for it to go anywhere else in particular lol. “Just not here”

I didn’t see this thread originally as I had no electricity at the time.

Isaias went right through my area and many of my neighbors ended up with trees through their houses and smashed cars. One transformer even blew up and started a big fire.

My greenhouse was thankfully unscathed but I stupidly left many plants out which got thrown about and had to be repotted. The worst was that I didn’t have electricity for six days in the south New York heat.

My plants in the end were fine but the person I buy orchids from locally lost a lot of his inventory as he was without power even longer than me.

It’s silly but I feel really bad about the lost trees. Most were tall oaks that were at least around a century old. The whole street looks different when they are taken away. We lost dozens in the area.

I was really lucky during Irma in 2017. At least a dozen houses in my neighborhood in the Keys were destroyed but I didn't lose a single tree and really had minimal damage although that didn't dampen the aggravation factor. In Key West which is only 25 miles away, Irma was a tree storm wiping out close to 75% of the old canopy trees such as the Royal Poinciana's and Mahogany's. It gets very warm in town now without those beautiful old trees. Fortunately there, only 1 house was hit by these falling giants and it happened to be the former home of author Shel Silverstein which ended up having to be razed.

So, I'm staying put up here in NH for Laura and just holding my breath now until this thing passes as it looks this morning as the storm track has slid even further south. I'll ask a friend to turn off the water to the shadehouse just in case things get knocked around and a pipe pops and then hopefully only have to straighten things up as necessary and turn water back on after it passes. I hate the waiting.

BrassStar- I have seen the landscape redefined a few times and it always hurts. I had many live oaks on my block and they are thinned bc the county doesn’t want widow makers.....

I still remember what Old Cutler rd looked like pre-Andrew. Banyan trees completely covered the road with a canopy about 35’ tall that went on, largely uninterrupted, for like 10 miles. Full of Bromeiliead, tillandsia, and philodendrons...plus the amazing banyan roots. Magical! And unfortunately, a timeless beauty becomes ephemeral
