Default Oncidium 'Emperor'

兰花洋兰跳舞兰 迷你文心兰苗室内盆栽 芳香 可可黄莺 带花剑花苞
huangwei wenxinlan = emperor oncidium

This is complicated. ID'ing plants in China is very different and quite difficult for me, because I cannot speak Chinese.

I purchased the above oncidium-like plants online with a large Chinese online retailer. The plants arrived in spike in beautiful condition. They bloomed not too long after. I was able to track-down the actual greenhouse bio-tech grower in Fuzhou China. I looked up Oncidium 'Emperor' surfing the internet, and my plants clearly were different. I came across Bapticidium Hwuluduen Chameleon 'Colorful Lake' and yes my plants are unmistakably the same identical plant.

After doing some research, the Taiwan Hwuluduen grower no longer exists. However, there are 2 other large Taiwan greenhouse/growers that do export this plant.

The first 4 pics are of my plants and the 5th pic is that of Bapticidium Hwuluduen Chameleon 'Colorful Lake' from a Taiwan grower.

So, should I label my plants Oncidium 'Emperor' or Bapticidium Hwuluduem Chameleon 'Colorful Lake'? Thanks for reading this very unimportant thread.

Thumbs up Big XieXie (Chinese thank you)!

I love your choice of words! Very nice compliment. Thank you! I have done so much research into the origin of this oncidium. It is pretty cool info to discover. Greg.

...your plant may or may not be Bapticidium, as your plant was never named that. Since you tracked down the Fuzhou grower your best chance of getting an ID would be to contact them or get a native speaker to if they don't speak your native language.

Default Huangwei wenxinlan

Color Classification (ID): Huang Wei Wen Xinlan with flower swords with flower pots : with pots

Above is what how the grower/seller labels the orchid.
This is the pinyin translation: Huangwei = emperor
Wenxinlan = oncidium

So, maybe you are right. I will keep the name as sold to me: Huangwei Wenxinlan = Oncidium 'Emperor'. And I bought this directly from the Chinese grower, so I better use the name that they assigned to the plant.

But it is so identical to Bapticidium Hwuluduen Chameleon 'Colorful Lake'. It is hard to believe that they are different plants.

Thank you for your help!!! Greg.

That is now considered to be Oncidesa Hwuluduen Chameleon.

It was originally registered as Oncidium Pupukea Sunset x Baptistonia echinata, but the latter was reclassified as a gomesa.

I'm sorry, but now you're making assumptions that cannot be well supported.

Identifying orchid hybrids from flower photos is pretty much folly.

There are simply too many, similar-looking hybrids out there to be absolutely certain you have the same plant. Add to that the fact that the same plant, when grown under different cultural conditions, can take on a different appearance, and it gets more difficult, especially as that means that two different, yet similar looking hybrids, each given the proper parameters, might end up looking the same.

While I agree with you that the plant sure looks like the oncidesa, you cannot be certain of that, and surely cannot be certain it's the 'Colorful Lake' cultivar.
