My Next Repotting Project
Default My Next Repotting Project

I got this Sharry Baby last fall which is in a 4" pot and currently in bloom. With flowers it stands about 30" tall and easily tips over especially when the medium dries out a bit.

I'm thinking of repotting but have a few questions:

1. Is a 5" pot okay or should I go 6" or bigger?
2. Should I top with moss and what kind is best? Currently it has moss on top of the media but I'm trying to rid all my plant of moss.
3. Should I repot now or wait for the flowers to dry out?

Thank you!

The time to repot Oncidiums is when new root growth is just beginning, so not yet.

After flowers fall they make new growth from the bases of newer pseudobulbs. Sometime thereafter the new growths make new roots. As soon as you see that, repot. If you do it at other times you damage roots and the plant is likely to be set back.

This plant grows so fast I would use a 6" or even 7". Medium is dictated by your growing conditions of temperature, humidity and watering. They should never dry completely. Oncidiums do very well in semihydroponic growing, if you were ever thinking about trying that.

I have a Sharry Baby in s/h. It is a monster and the spikes are anywhere between 3-4' long. I have had two spikes from the same side of the same bulb twice. I'd say it loves s/h
